Federer and Nadal headline action on Day 8. They both have dominant records against their respective 4th round opponents.
Day 8: Feature Previews
Rafael Nadal v Aleksandr Dolgopolov
Nadal has been tested in all three of his matches and Dolgopolov poses and even bigger threat than any of his previous opponents. For some reason Rafa is content with sitting 5 metres behind the baseline early in his matches and it has allowed his opponents to swing freely early on. Dolgopolov has let fly against Rafa in the past and has won 2 of their last 3 meetings. Both of the Ukranian’s wins have come on a fast surface – on the grass at Queen’s and on a similar hard court at Indian Wells. If Nadal goes into his shell early we could see him in trouble yet again. Nadal has not made it beyond this stage at the US Open since he last won in 2013. The Over is 3-0 in the Spaniard’s matches and The Wolf says that trend will continue.
Best: Over 33.5 games ($1.85)
Juan Martin Del Potro v Dominic Thiem
Del Potro’s greatest memories as a tennis player have come at this tournament and it has been a long road back since he won his maiden slam here in 2009. He has won just one title in the last 3 years compared to Thiem’s 8 in the same stretch. 6 of Thiem’s 8 titles have come on clay but what is surprising is that Del Potro won their only prior encounter which came on the clay courts in Madrid last year. This surface will favour the Argentine and following 3 straight sets wins The Wolf can see him growing in confidence. Thiem likes to play off the back foot and that is a very dangerous formula against the Del Potro forehand.
Best: Del Potro WIN ($1.80)
Roger Federer v Philipp Kohlschreiber
A look at the draw and one would have thought that Federer would have breezed through his quarter of the draw. Prior to the tournament he was a combined 40-0 against Tiafoe, Youzhny, Lopez and Kohlschreiber. He had to dig deep against Tiafoe and Youzhny but finally found his feet against Lopez. He is still well below his best but with a 11-0 record against the German it is fair to assume that he won’t need to play out of his skin. The key for Roger is preserving energy and with this being his 3rd consecutive opponent with a single handed backhand The Wolf is expecting him to be in complete control. He will expose the Kohlschreiber backhand and post a routine straight sets win.
Best: Sets Federer 3-0 ($1.85)
