US Open Day 7
There was no shortage of drama on Day 6. Two of the top seeds in Murray and Wawrinka were on the ropes early before pulling through while Juan Martin Del Potro continues his meteoric rise back towards the top of men’s tennis. His forehand was in punishing form against Ferrer and he is yet to drop a set. What shaped as a thrilling night session ended in disappointment as Nick Kyrgios was forced to retire hurt – succumbing to a ongoing injury.
The action ramps up in as we head into the 4th round. Tsonga takes on a red hot Jack Sock while Djokovic and Nadal head into their respective matches as overwhelming favourites.
Here are The Wolf’s winners for Day 7.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga v Jack Sock
This one will be worth staying up for. Both men only know one way to play the game – full throttle, and they won’t be taking their foot of the pedal in this one. Jack Sock is coming off one of the biggest wins of his career and the way he blew Cilic off the court was mind blowing. He didn’t even face a break point! Tsonga used similar treatment to take care of Kevin Anderson who was unable to break the Frenchman’s serve. Both men with thunder down serves in excess of 220km per hour and with first serve win percentages above 80% breaks of serve will be few and far between. Tsonga needed a 3rd set tiebreak to win their only meeting last year but that encounter was on clay. They will need the fire hose on standby as the court of Flushing Meadows will be burning hot with winners in this one. The Over is the best bet by a long way.
Tip: Over 41.5 games ($1.83)
Novak Djokovic v Kyle Edmund
When you’re the world number 1 and a 12 time grand slam winner you don’t exactly need any help getting through the early rounds but Novak has had plenty of it. He didn’t need to take the court in the second round with Vesely unable to play and that was followed by Youzhny retiring midway through the first set. Believe it or not, this is not the ideal preparation heading into the second week of a major. Djokovic was tested by Janowicz in the opening round and his last genuine hit out against a quality opponent was a loss to Del Potro at the Olympics. Meanwhile Edmund has defeated Gasquet and Isner, both former top 10 players, to get to this stage. Djokovic won their only encounter earlier this year in Miami 6-6 6-3 but Edmund did manage to break Novak’s serve. The Brit has also been able to consistently creak break opportunities throughout the tournament breaking Gasquet 6 time and the almost unbreakable Isner a further 3. The Wolf has Edmund forcing at least one breaker and gives him a chance of catching Novak off guard and pinching a set.
Tip: Over 30.5 games ($1.83)
