US Open Day 3
The upsets came thick and fast on Day 2 with Goffin, Querrey and Aussie Bernard Tomic all getting rolled. We also saw Dolgopolov, Kohlschreiber and Coric retire handing their opponents and easy path into the second round.
The antics of Tomic are not even worth touching on and are yet another clear example that both he and Kyrgios are on the road to nowhere until they change their attitude.
There will be plenty of power on display on Day 3 with Isner, Tsonga, Anderson and Cilic all taking the court. Nadal takes on Andreas Seppi while Monfils and Raonic will also start heavy favourites in their respective matches.
World number 1 Novak Djokovic will look to regroup after dropping a set in his opening match but he will again face a barrage of big serves – this time from the racquet of Jiri Vesely.
Bring on Day 3!
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga v James Duckworth
Aussie James Duckworth battled to a 5 set win over Robin Haase in the opening round which will make this one all the more difficult. Tsonga didn’t get out of first gear against Andreozzi and won an astonishing 95% of 1st serve points. That is a clear indication of how difficult it will be for Duckworth to break the Tsonga serve. Temperatures are again set to soar into the 30’s which is not ideal for the Aussie who likes to work his way into the match with extended rallies. Duckworth doesn’t have the game to blow away the Frenchman so he will have to get creative. Look for him to try and hit in behind Tsonga and into his backhand which should allow him to move forward to the net. The 5 setter against Haase is a big factor heading into this one. The last two times that Duckworth won in 5 at a slam he bundled out the following round in straight sets. Against the quality and big hitting of Tsonga the same result is inevitable.
Tip: Sets Tsonga 3-0 ($1.53)
Rafael Nadal v Andreas Seppi
As we saw at the Olympics less than a fortnight ago this is a complete mismatch. Rafa won in straight sets on that occasion and has won 7 of their last 8 meetings. Nadal has dominated winning 12 consecutive sets against the Italian. The Wolf was all over Rafa in his opening match and the warm conditions will again suit him in this one. We saw his balls zip off the court against Istomin and we will see much of the same in this one. As a result he will pin Seppi deep in the court which will prevent the Italian from hitting up the line – something that is key when trying to take Rafa away from his forehand. The 14 time grand slam champion has been blessed with a favourable draw early and The Wolf doesn’t expect him to let up.
Tip: Nadal -8.5 ($1.91)
Vasek Posposil v Kevin Anderson
You can tune into this one for 10 minutes every hour as things will only get interesting when they get into tiebreakers. Anderson played 7 breakers here in his first four matches last year and Posposil has gone out in 5 sets in his last three trips to Flushing Meadows. Their one and only meeting was a 7-5 7-6 win to Anderson and that was on a clay court. On the hard courts breaking serve will be close to impossible for this pair. Posposil faced just two break points in his first round match and will look to attack the net as often as possible. The Wolf has this one going 5 but we will need only 4 sets for the Overs to salute. Best of the day!
Tip: Over 39.5 points ($1.91)
Novak Djokovic v Jiri Vesely
If you haven’t heard the name Jiri Vesely you may remember it after this match. Vesely is one of a select few to have a winning record against Djokovic and although they have only met once, that win win give him plenty of confidence on the big stage. It was earlier this year and although it was Djokovic’s first match on clay for the season, Vesely played some outstanding tennis. Djokovic had won 24 consecutive sets leading into the match but the tricky left hander brought his A-Game. He will look to the sliding serve in the ad court and will hit looping forehands similar to Rafa. Djokovic was rattled by Janowicz in his opening match and Vesely will look to employ similar tactics by going for his shots. We will back the Overs again as we did in Novak’s opening match.
Tip: Over 30.5 games ($1.91)
