Shaghai Masters Preview
It’s the second last Masters Series event of the year and the final outdoor tournament of the season. The chase for a top 8 finish in the race and a spot at the World Tour Finals really heats up this week. With his win in Tokyo overnight Aussie Nick Kyrgios has given himself a chance of breaking into the top 10 before the season’s end. Pouille, Tsonga and Dimitrov are also on the outside looking in and would need some good performances in the closing month of the season if they are to make their way to London.
As is always the case with the Masters Series events the matchups are tough from the very first round. Former top 10 players Youzhny and Almagro meet on the opening day with the battle of the servers between Karlovic and Posposil another must watch match. The Wolf previews all of the Day 1 action.
Alexander Zverev v John Isner
This is Isner’s first match on tour since the US Open and The Wolf expects him to get off to a slow start. That is something he cannot afford against a quality opponent making a Alexander Zverev win the bet in this one. The young German won his maiden title in St Petersburg a fortnight ago with wins over Berdych and Wawrinka and was solid again last week in Beijing. Unlike Isner, he doesn’t rely solely on his serve and the American will not be able to get into enough Zverev service games. The form of the America has really tailed off this season and it has reflecting in the rankings where he has fallen from 11th to the mid 20’s. The Wolf will to continue to ride the form of the young German and says there can only be one winner. Zverev!
Tip: Zverev WIN ($1.62)
Ivo Karlovic v Vasek Psoposil
Breaking the Karlovic serve continues to be a monumental mountain to climb for his opponents. In what can only be described as an astonishing statistic the last 8 sets that Karlovic has contested have all been settled via a tiebreaker. As a result the Overs has been saluting at a ridiculous clip in his matches and is 7-0 in his last 7. Posposil is no slouch himself when it comes to serving big and playing long sets and breakers. With 4 breakers in his last 3 completed matches and a 2-1 H2H record against Karlovic you can be sure that this one will go the distance.
