Aussie Thanasi Kokkinakis made global headlines with his win over Federer and it means that the 20 time Grand Slam champion will lose his number 1 ranking at the end of the week. It could be a huge week for the Aussies with both he and Kyrgios still in the draw. With the court conditions catering for the big servers The Wolf says both men have a great chance to progress to the 4th round.
Miami Masters Feature Previews
Thanasi Kokkinakis v Fernando Verdasco
We have already made note of Thanasi’s win over Federer but The Wolf warns that he must stay grounded and keep working hard. The Wolf doesn’t mind a bit of swagger but it is far too early for him to be saying that few men can match it with him if his game is on. Firstly, you have to play at a high level on a consistent basis to make comments like that. We have seen young players post wins over the world’s best and fail to back it up. The Wolf can see this happening to Kokkinakis. Verdasco has truck loads of experience with several wins over elite players in 2018 including Thiem and Dimitrov. We saw Kokkonakis struggle against the left handed serve of Lopez and The Wolf is predicting Verdasco to use his serve very smartly. This will be a tough learning curve for the Aussie.
Best Bet: Verdasco WIN ($1.67)
Nick Kyrgios v Fabio Fognini
In what was his first match since the Australian Open, Kyrgios was in devastating form. It came as a surprise to The Wolf as he has very little faith in the consistency of the young Aussie. One thing we do know is that he has one of the most dominant serves on the tour and it was on full display. He made 68% of 1st serves against Lajovic and won an incredible 86% of all points on his serve. Those numbers make it impossible to break his serve and Fognini is far from the most secure when it comes to taking care of his own service games. Kyrgios in straight sets.
Best Bet: Sets Kyrgios 2-0 ($2.02)
Tomas Berdych v Frances Tiafoe
Points will be short, both men will hold serve with ease and we will see multiple breakers. The surface is playing fast and generating breaks of serve will not be easy in the hot conditions. Berdych failed to face a single break point in his win over Nishioka and Tiafoe has been the king of tiebreakers this week with 3 of the 5 sets he has contested being settled by one. The Wolf is rolling out multiple 5 chippers today and this is one of them!
Best Bet: Over 22.5 games ($1.85)
Karen Khachanov v Kevin Anderson
Wolfy was going to preview the Zverev/Ferrer clash but have to by-pass it for this one. Why… because he has found another 5 chipper! Khachanov and Anderson have been in great touch in 2018. Khachanov had a title winning run in Marseille while Anderson has made 3 finals, winning in New York. Both men possess massive first serves and have the ability to generate spin and bound with their second delivery. It is the reason why Anderson has won over 90% of service games over the last 12 months with Khachanov not far behind. The Wolf said he has multiple 5 chippers today and this is the second one!
