Djokovic made an early exit yesterday while Federer had his troubles getting past little known Federico Delbonis. Can the seeds survive or will the upsets continue…
Indian Wells Masters Preview
Roger Federer v Filip Krajinovic
It was far from smooth sailing for Federer in his rain delayed match against Delbonis. He struggled to make any inroads on the lefty’s serve and managed just a single break point opportunity. He will need to improve against Krajinovic who is hitting some very good ball at the present moment. He is showing that his run to the Paris Master final was no fluke. He made the semi’s in Dubai leading into this tournament and his last two losses – both to Pouille, have come in very tight three set encounters. We have consistently seen him win over 50% of 2nd serve points this season and that will make his serve tough to break down. We will be taking him with the big start!
Best Bet: Krajinovic +5.5 ($2.00)
Tomas Berdych v Hyenon Chung
Berdych was in vintage form in his previous match and The Wolf has him making light work of Chung. The Korean burst onto the scene with his win over Djokovic at the Australian Open but he has struggled against a particular type of opponent – power hitters. His last two defeats have come against Anderson and Tiafoe, men with similar but inferior games to Berdych. The Czech is one of the cleanest hitters on tour and if you give him the baseline he will punish you. That is Chung’s style and it will cost him. Berdych in straight sets.
Best Bet: Berdych WIN ($1.80)
Pablo Cuevas v Dominic Thiem
They have met on three occasions, all on clay, with Thiem winning two of them. The courts at Indian Wells have been playing slower than expected and that favours both these men who take big cuts at the ball and like to play off the back foot with their single handed backhands. It makes for a real grind and some very long rallies. Cuevas’ match against Shapovalov was the perfect lead in for a clash with Thiem and we all know that The Wolf loves to back against the Austrian on hard courts. We will be backing the Overs and having a small play on Cuevas for the outright win.
