It has been a good tournament for the seeds with 6 of the top 7 men remaining in the draw while on the women’s side Day 9 is all about the clash between Serena and Sharapova.
Men’s French Open Feature Previews
Rafael Nadal v Maximilian Marterer
This is about the time at the French Open when the ‘King of Clay’ really puts the hammer down. He sent Gasquet to all corners of Court Philippe-Chatrier and Marterer is about to get a taste of the same medicine. The Wolf doesn’t want to discredit anything that the German has done to date but Nadal has his way with fellow left-handers. Marterer will do well to avoid being bageled.
Best Bet: Nadal -10.5 ($1.73)
John Isner v Juan Martin Del Potro
We are used to seeing long baseline exchanges on clay but they will be few and far between in this one. Isner and Del Potro are two of the most dominant servers on tour and the rate of tiebreakers in recent Isner matches is almost unbelievable. 7 of the 10 sets he has contested in Paris have been decided by a breaker to go with 12 of his last 17 leading into the French Open. That makes it 19 of his last 27 sets!!! The Wolf says to get on the Overs and watch the pair trade breaker over the first 4 sets.
Best Bet: Over 42 games ($1.85)
Marin Cilic v Fabio Fognini
The win by Cilic over Johnson was his best performance of the tournament but this looms as a very different matchup. Johnson relies almost exclusive on his serve and inside-out forehand combination. Fognini is very different. The Italian is dangerous from both wings on the baseline and his backhand has stood the test against Rafa – the ultimate barometer. It has been a long time since they have met with their last meeting coming in 2011. The ability of Cilic to hold serve means we are in for long sets and many of them. The Wolf cannot see either man winning in straight sets and that makes the Overs great value.

Women’s French Open Tips
Serena Williams v Maria Sharapova
Grudge match alert!!! Serena did not hold back when asked about references made about her by Sharapova in her autobiography. She labelled the comments as ‘hearsay’ but there is plenty to suggest otherwise. Serena has absolutely dominated this series 19-2 which includes 18 consecutive victories. There is no doubt that she is still below her best having played very little tennis but it is impossible to take Sharapova. Serena has her number and that will not be changing any time soon.
