French Open Tips: Day 5

atp tour tips and preview

We had some epic matches overnight with Zverev, Nishikori and Dimitrov all going the distance while Berdych bowed out in five at the hands of Chardy. On Day 5 we will turn our attention to Nadal and Cilic who will both start as overwhelming favourites. The Wolf says to expect the unexpected. Find out why…

Men’s French Open Feature Previews

Denis Shapovalov v Maximilian Marterer
The Wolf has had nothing but love for Shapovalov since he burst on the scene last year and he continues to develop at a rapid rate. If you are yet to witness his talents strap in as he is one of the most entertaining players on tour. He has a super aggressive style and a never say die attitude. Still a teenager, he displays the point construction ability of a veteran. He has also quickly learned to adapt his game to clay. He has already registered wins over Querrey, Paire, Raonic, Edmund, Nishikori and Berdych in 2018. This one will be on his racquet and his ability to take advantage of his shots by moving forward will see him win handily.
Best Bet: Shapovalov -3.5 ($1.73)

Thomas Fabbiano v Borna Coric
Take note of the name ‘Coric’ as he will be making the second week according to The Wolf. He accounted for the in-form Kohlschreiber in the opening round and has shown that he can take it to the best in the world. He has 8 wins against top 10 players which includes multiple wins over Rafael Nadal. He is a special talent with a very complete game. He can trade blows from the baseline and do so for long periods of time without making errors. Fabbiano needed 5 sets to get pasr Ebden and this is several levels above his best. Coric in straight sets.
Best Bet: Coric -7.5 ($1.70)

Rafael Nadal v Guido Pella
The forecast for Day 5… cloudy, overcast and windy. Not ideal for Nadal and The Wolf says Pella could raise some eyebrows. The Argentine has career wins over Thiem, Fognini and Schwartzman on clay which is his preferred surface. The Wolf likes several aspects of this matchup for Pella. As a lefty he is less likely to get exposed by the Nadal forehand and his two-handed backhand is good enough to keep him in the baseline exchanges. His most important asset is his forehand down the line. It will allow him to target the Nadal backhand and open up the court. The Wolf is not tipping him to win, but says the conditions will make it much harder for Nadal to completely dominate.
Best Bet: Over 26.5 games ($2.00)

Women’s French Open Feature Previews

Samantha Stosur v Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova
Aussie Sam Stosur wound the clock back in her opening round match and The Wolf is very surprised to see her as the outsider for this clash. Pavlyuchenkova may be the seeded player but it is Stosur who won their most recent meeting a fortnight ago in Madrid. She completely dominated on serve winning 75% of all service points – a massive number in women’s tennis, let alone on clay. She thundered down 15 aces in that match and we could see a similar number. Stosur!
Best Bet: Stosur WIN ($2.20)

Serena Williams v Ashleigh Barty
Ash Barty will not get a better opportunity than this to beat Serena. The three time French Open champion and owner of 23 Grand Slams struggled in her opening round match. She made just 55% of 1st serves, had 7 double faults and won only 39% of points behind her second delivery. Her movement was miles off what we have become accustomed to and Barty has the power to really test the former world number 1. The Wolf has no doubt that Serena will return to the summit and win more slams but she has work to do. Barty to make it a good day in Paris for the Aussie women.
Best Bet: Barty WIN ($1.85)
