French Open Tips: Day 4

atp tour tips and preview

Rain interupted much of the play on Day 3 but we still managed to complete most of the matches. Berdych is staring down the barrel of defeat after losing the first two sets in tiebreakers and will need to dig deep to get past Chardy. The Wolf says there is one match that cannot be missed – Thiem v Tsitsipas!

Men’s French Open Feature Previews

Dusan Lajovic v Alexander Zverev
Zverev’s tremendous form on clay continued with a 6-1 6-1 6-2 thrashing of Berankis in the opening round. The Young German is currently 17-2 on clay this season and the manner in which he is winning is impressive. His serve in particular has been phenomenal. Very few men have been able to make any inroads on his serve and it is the reason why he has dropped just 4 sets in his last 15 matches. Lajovic may be in good form but he does not have the consistency from the backhand wing to trouble Zverev. One way traffic!
Best Bet: Zverev -7.5 ($1.80)

Gilles Simon v Sam Querrey
The Wolf is taking Querrey on – again! He beat fellow countryman Tiafoe in the opening round but The Wolf says it will all come to an end against Simon. Querrey has made it past the 2nd round just once in 11 prior attempts at the French Open while Simon has made the 3rd round or better in 7 of his last 8 here. Simon leads the H2H 4-2 which includes victory in their only other meeting on clay. The Frenchman made the final in Lyon last week (lost to Thiem) and will have the advantage of home crowd support.
Best Bet: Simon WIN ($1.85)

Dominic Thiem v Stefanos Tsitsipas
Get ready for a thriller! Thiem has been labelled as one of the main threats to Nadal and a future champion, but he will have to get past a young man with a big game. Thiem is no stranger to the former junior world number one. Just a few weeks ago in Barcelona, Tsitsipas reeled of the final 14 points to claim a comfortable straight sets win over Thiem. The pair share a similar style – big forehand combined with a silky single-handed backhand. Tsitsipas does possess more power on serve but the Thiem kick second serve is a big asset for the Austrian. Tsitsipas is yet to prove himself at Grand Slam level meaning Thiem is the justifiable favourite. Nevertheless, this one could go the full 5 sets!
Best Bet: Over 36.5 games ($1.85)

Women’s French Open Feature Previews

Petra Kvitova v Lara Arruabarrena
The heavy conditions were not ideal for Kvitova in her opening match and we are again set for some scattered thunderstorms on Day 4. It shouldn’t trouble her against Arruabarrena. There is a reason why Kvitova has compiled a 12 match win streak and it is because she is hitting the ball as clean as a whistle. She is serving well and as a lefty, that makes her a very difficult proposition. The Wolf has her featuring very heavily over the next fortnight.
Best Bet: Kvitova -5.5 ($1.73)

Georgina Garcia-Perez v Caroline Wozniacki
Wozniacki was a very slow starter against Collins and came back from a break down twice before taking the opening set. It is no secret that she lacks the pure shot making ability to dominate on this surface and looks to frustrate her opponents by making minimal errors. That was the case against Collins but Garcia-Perez poses a different threat. As is the case with all Spanish players, she has grown up on this surface and knows how to construct points on clay. This one cold go a lot longer than expected.
Best Bet: Over 18.5 games ($2.00)
