We didn’t have to wait long for the upsets at Roland Garros! Women’s defending champion Jelena Ostapenko made the earliest of exits following a terrible performance. She had 13 double faults and a total of 48 unforced errors. Tonight we will see Nadal begin his title defence and The Wolf says it will be smooth sailing for the 10 time winner.
Men’s French Open Feature Previews
Rogerio Dutra Silva v Novak Djokovic
The Wolf will be keeping a very close eye on the former champions taking the court today – namely Nadal, Wawrinka and Djokovic. He has been very vocal about Novak’s struggles and doesn’t feel that he will be turning the corner any time soon. He has looked much steadier from the baseline and did play well against Nadal in Rome but we do not know how he will react to the best of 5 sets format. He built his career on his athleticism but we have seen him lose the deciding set in each of the last 4 times he has been there. Daniel, Thiem, Klizan and Edmund have all won deciding sets against him in 2018 so expect Dutra Silva to grab at least a set.
Best Bet: Over 29.5 games ($1.85)
Guillermo Garcia-Lopez v Stan Wawrinka
There isn’t a tennis fan on the planet that does not love watching Wawrinka. At his best, we have seen him beat all of the big guns on the biggest stage – all of them! Unfortunately, he is nowhere near his best. He has lost 8 of the 12 matches he has contested since making the final here a year ago. Some of the names he has lost to… Griekspoor, Ivashka and Fucsovics. He was embarrassed 6-4 6-0 last wee in Geneva and is there for the taking. Garci-Lopez knows his way around a clay court and has 3 wins over Wawrinka – all on this surface. Most notable, he beat Wawrinka in the opening round here back in 2014. Do yourself a favour and back Garcia-Lopez with the handicap start.
Best Bet: Garcia-Lopez +2.5 ($1.85)
Rafael Nadal v Simone Bolelli
Back up the track and get ready to put on the chips in play for this bet. Nadal has been in devastating form this season and is a near perfect 17-1 on clay in 2018. Thiem was the only man to beat him with Fognini and Zverev the only other to take a set off the world no.1. The 10 time French Open champion is a perfect 5-0 against Bolelli and has won the last 11 sets contested by the pair. The Italian has not won more than 2 games in each of the last 7 sets they have played and that makes the Unders in this match a fantastic bet! Bolelli will not be winning more than 5 games.
Best Bet: Under 24.5 games ($2.00)
Women’s French Open Feature Previews
Petra Kvitova v Veronica Cepede-Royg
Kvitova has been on fire and The Wolf expects her form to continue in Paris. She is on an 11 match winning streak which has seen her claim consecutive titles in Prague and Madrid. She is in a good part of the draw which should see her breeze through the opening rounds. Cepede-Royg doesn’t have the weapons to take it to Kvitova and that spells danger. They won’t be on the court for more than an hour.
Best Bet: Under 18.5 games ($1.91)
Maria Sharapova v Richel Hogenkamp
It hasn’t been the smoothest return to tennis for Sharapova but has started to find her feet. She made the quarters in Madrid before a run to the semi’s in Rome. She beat some very handy players along the way including Barty, Cibuklkova, Gavrilova and Ostapenko. A two-time winner here and a tenacious competitor, Maria will want to hit the ground running. Hogenkamp has struggle to even qualify for events and this is several levels beyond her best.
Best Bet: Sharapova -6.5 ($1.91)
