French Open Tips: Day 13 (Men’s Semi Finals)

atp tour tips and preview

Nadal showed why he is a 10 time French Open champion and it will now be Del Potro’s turn to try and dethrone him.

Men’s French Open Tips

Marco Cecchinato v Dominic Thiem
The Wolf had very high hopes for Thiem at the start of the clay court season and after a setback in Monte Carlo but made the final in Madrid before winning Lyon. On paper this looks like it can only go one way and The Wolf agrees! Cecchinato had a 0-4 record at the majors prior to the French and had come up short in the qualifiers another 9 times! To think that he can make the final is just absurd. He deserves credit for his wins over Goffin, Carreno-Busta and Djokovic but Thiem is a man at the top of his game. The Thiem forehand is almost impossible to deal with on this surface and his second serve on the ad court will take Cecchinato completely out of the court. The Italian has done well when he has been able to set his feet but The Wolf says that will not happen anywhere near as often against Thiem. His power and depth will force his to play from well behind the baseline. This one will be done in straight sets and it will be third time lucky for Thiem after losing in the semi’s in each of the last two years in Paris.
Best Bet: Sets Thiem 3-0 ($1.85)

Rafael Nadal v Juan Martin Del Potro
Nadal’s French Open set winning streak came to an end after 3 years and 37 sets. What hasn’t ended though is his reign as the ‘King of Clay’. He crushed Schwartzman when their match resumed and will now face a familiar foe in Del Potro. In their most recent meeting at the semi’s of the US Open last year, Del Potro won the first set before Nadal won 18 of the next 23 games to close out a comfortable winner. It was a lethargic Del Potro in the latter stages of that match and we saw something very similar against Cilic. He dud deep to get through and will have some belief in the semi. After all, he has 5 career wins against Rafa and has taken a set off him on clay. His preparation hasn’t been ideal with only 4 matches on clay in 2018 prior to this tournament but you can never count out his forehand. The first set will tell the story and will be the one he makes the biggest push in. The Wolf says the opening set will go down to the wire before Nadal takes complete control as he has done for well over a decade on clay.
Best Bet: Nadal -6.5 ($1.73)
