The players did it tough on Wednesday with rain constantly interrupting the days play. Tomic and Monfils, The Wolf’s two feature previews, got on and off the court quick smart as did Cilic and Isner.
It’s been a good start for the Aussies with Kyrgios, Tomic and Millman all into the second round but all three have very tricky encounters coming up. Wawrinka finds himself in a real jam after he was down a set to Donaldson when play was suspended.
We may still be in the 2nd round but the draw has thrown up some very interesting matchups. Raonic and Isner meet in a clash of big servers while the in form Gael Monfils takes on Marcos Baghdatis – a man more than capable of causing an upset.
It shapes as a very tough day at the office for the Australian contingent with Tomic taking on David Goffin, Millman facing Dominic Thiem and Kyrgios locking horns will fellow young gun Borna Coric.
Nick Kyrgios v Borna Coric
The Wolf has been one of the biggest critics of Kyrgios but he is the first to admit the following – Kyrgios is flying at the moment! The loss to Shapovalov in Toronto seems to have been the wake up call he needed and if he could focus for 90% of the time in his matches the sky is the limit. He has one of the biggest games on the tour and when his serve is on, it is unbreakable. He made very light work of Coric when they met earlier this year and The Wolf is predicting a repeat. Even is Coric can keep things close and force a breaker, the Kyrgios serve will then take over. The Aussie to get it done in straight sets. Load up the chips – all of them!
Tip: Sets Kyrgios 2-0 ($1.67)
Pablo Cuevas v Rafael Nadal
What started as a very promising week in Rio for Nadal ended with disappointment with losses to Del Potro and then Nishikori. He may have failed to grab a medal but there is no doubt that he would have grown in confidence after having played half a dozen matches. It is the most tennis he has played in a single week for a long while and the last 3 in particular were both tough and grueling. Cuevas famously beat Nadal on clay earlier this year and had also taken a set off him in a previous encounter. A great run of results has seen Cuevas push into thew top 20. He made the finals in Nottingham on grass and the final in Hamburg on clay less than a month later. The win over Sam Querrey in the opening round is yet another sign of how well he is hitting the ball at the moment. The Wolf said we would see some upsets in the early rounds and this could be one. He’ll be all over Cuevas with the handicap, says to have something on the Overs and a Cuevas win.
Tip: Cuevas +4.5 ($1.67)
