Aus Open Day 9: Quarter Finals Preview

Day 9: Men’s and Women’s  Quarter Finals

Venus Williams v Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (11:00am)
With Kerber making a early exit younger sister Serena is now the favourite but The Wolf cannot figure out how Venus continues to work her way through the draw unnoticed. Right now she is the best value bet to win it all. At $21 she worth more than a bet. she has a winning record against Pavlyuchenko and is a combined 4-0 against possible semi final opponents in Vandeweghe and Muguruza. Pliskova and sister Serena are on the other side so she would only have to play one of them. In terms of this match Venus is 3-2 against Pavlyuchenkova having won the last two meetings. Age is proving no barrier for the veterans this year and after playing virtually the bare minimum to this stage (yet to drop a set), Venus will again be on the front foot from the word go.
Best Bet: Venus Williams WIN ($1.91)
Value Bet: Sets Williams 2-0 ($3.00)

Coco Vandewghe v Garbine Muguruza (1:00pm)
Quote Wolfy… “Kerber will make an earlier than expected exit and Coco has the serve, power and consistency required to get it done”. The Wolfpack were all over Vadeweghe at the juicy odds of $3.50 as she made the world number 1 and defending champion look like just another player. Kerber had no answer as Coco took the game away from her with 6 aces and 78% of first serve points won. It was a similar story for Muguruza who won 86% of first serve points against Cirstes – smashing 18 winners for just 9 unforced errors. Vandeweghe leads the H2H 2-1 but it was the Spaniard who was victorious at Cincinnati last year – a court that plays very similar to this one. With both ladies dominating on serve breaks will be hard to come by. The Over is as close to a 5 chipper as we will find this tournaments with the winner to be determined by a deciding 3rd set.
Best Bet: Over 21.5 games ($1.83)
Value Bet: Sets Total – 3 Sets ($2.25)

Stan Wawrinka v Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (2:15pm)
This is going to be some quarter final. Power, power and more power! You won’t see either man take a back seat in this one and rarely is that a match that they don’t win on their own racquet. Stan leads the H2H 4-3 having won the last 3 but they have played out some unbelievable matches in the past. One unusual fact is that 6 of their 7 encounters have come on clay. Nevertheless, they have played in four best of 5 set matches with two going 4 sets and the other two going the distance – each player winning once. On a surface which it is more difficult to break The Wolf says we will see some very long sets. The last four sets played by Stan have been decided by a breaker while Tsonga has also played four this tournament. The winner will be spent heading into the semi’s.
Best Bet: Over 40.5 games ($1.83)
Value Bet: Sets Total – 5 Sets ($3.60)

Roger Federer v Mischa Zverev (7:00pm)
Federer was supposed to have the toughest draw of all the top players but after difficult matches against Berdych and Nishikori he has somehow avoided the top seed and current number 1, Andy Murray. Mischa Zverev played the match of his life to beat Murray in 4 sets on the back of relentless net pressure. The German made 118 approaches to the net and prevented Murray from finding any sort of rhythm. He will not be afforded the same comfort against Federer. Over the years Federer has feasted on player who serve and volley and he will do much of the same here. There is no harder player to approach the net against as Federer takes time away from his opponents by sitting up on the baseline and taking the ball earlier than anybody else on the tour. Federer double bageled Zverev when they last met in Halle and although he won’t be as dominant here The Wolf cannot see this match ticking past two hours. Federer will march on.
Best Bet: Sets Federer 3-0 ($1.62)
Value Bet: Federer -7.5 ($2.00)
