Citi Open Washington

A long and very hot week in Washington comes to an end with Monfils taking on Karlovic for the title. The big serving Croat won as an underdogs for the second consecutive match in the semi’s, accounting for American Steve Johnson with ease. As good as he was, his performance was overshadowed by that of Monfils. The Frenchman was completely and utterly dominant against Zverev in a 6-4 6-0 drubbing.

Monfils has been dominant all week. He had dropped serve just once and all 8 of the sets he has won have been by a scoreline of 6-4 or better. That being said he has a terrible record in finals. Monfils is 5-19 in career finals including a loss here back in 2011. Karlovic on the other hand is 7-8 in finals and is coming off a title winning run in Newport last week. Like Monfils, he has put on a serving clinic this week and is yet to drop a set. He serve is yet to be broken in the tournament and he has faced just 10 break points – saving all of them. The steaming hot conditions have made his serve close to impossible to return, adding both additional speed and bounce.

The pair are tied at 2 wins a piece in their previous four meetings but both of Monfils wins have come on clay. Their two meetings outside of that, at Cincinnati on a hard court and Nottingham on grass, have been extremely close – and both Karlovic victories. In those two matches, they have contested 5 sets, 4 of which have been decided via a tiebreak. Monfils sits very deep behind the baseline (up to 5m) when returning and that will make it extremely hard against the Croatian. It will give Karlovic ample time to close the net and put away easy volleys.

Karlovic should not be this price to win and is great value at the line. The Wolf has labelled the overs as a special and says we will see multiple breakers in this one. Temperatures are forecast in the mid to high 30’s so get behind Karlovic to cause the upset and win in three very tight sets!
