First round action continues in London and Halle this evening with no major upsets to speak of overnight. The big story was thee retirement of Nick Kyrgios, who was again forced to succumb to a chronic hip injury. He insists that he will be able to take the court at Wimbledon in a fortnight’s time but The Wolf has already put a line through him. The very best in the game find it hard to win slams when in peak physical condition leaving very little light at the end of the tunnel for a youngster carrying an injury to break through.
Thanasi Kokkinakis v Milos Raonic
This shapes as an extremely tough matchup for Kokkinakis. Raonic has proven to be one of the toughest players to beat on grass thanks to a booming serve, an improving net game and a very effective slice backhand. His game is built for grass and the results don’t lie. He went 10-2 on the surface last year losing in the finals of both Queen’s and Wimbledon – to Murray on both occasions. The Wolf says he is in for another huge showing this season, especially with the top men either below their best or returning from time off. Currently Raonic is $15 to win Wimbledon and The Wolf says it’s a great bet. He will shorten following a deep run this week.
Best Bet: Raonic -3.5 ($1.60)
Feliciano Lopez v Stan Wawrinka
Stan better be on his game as Lopez is one of the most dangerous players on grass. The Spaniard made the final in Stuttgart last week while Stan has taken time off since losing to Nadal in the final of the French. The Wolf says it leaves the door open for a Lopez upset. Grass is Wawrinka’s worst surface by a ling way. He has never made it beyond the quarters at Wimbledon and has no grass court titles to his name. In fact, he has lost in the opening round of Wimbledon in 5 of his 12 appearances. He holds a 4-2 edge in the H2H including a win over Lopez when they last met in grass in 2014. There were multiple tiebreakers in that match and we may very well see somehting similar in this one. Lopez has adjusted to the surface seamlessly and with this being Stan’s first match on grass The Wolf is predicting Lopez to give him some serious troubles. Thye will need a deciding set.

Tommy Haas v Bernard Tomic
Tomic’s career is at a real crossroads at the moment. Ranked as high as 17 a little over a year ago he has gone on more than just a slide. He currently sits at no.61 in the rankings and has a 4th round points at Wimbledon to defend. An early exit there will see him fall even further. He has won only 6 of 18 matches on tour this season highlighted by some very bad losses. Haas on the other hand is on high. He played excellent controlled tennis to beat Federer in Stuttgart and will again have the crowd support here. The German has the game to frustrate Tomic and we have seen how quickly the Aussie’s game can unravel. The Wolf is taking the veteran.
Best Bet: Haas -0.5 ($2.00)
Roger Federer v Yen-Hsun Lu
The Wolf says not to be discouraged by Federer’s loss last week to Haas. He was first up on grass and found himself a set and a break up. His timing was slightly off but The Wolf expects a marked improvement this week. He is 3-0 lifetime against Lu and has never dropped a set against him. Lu has been spending much of his time on the Challenger Tour with his wins on the main tour few and far between. Federer has won close to 40% of return points in their three meetings – a huge number! Anything close to that will see Federer break serve 3-4 times.
