World Cup Match 35: Iran v Portugal

The final game of Day 12 will see Iran facing Portugal at the Mordovia Arena in Saransk, where a shock Iran win would see them leapfrog Portugal for a spot in the knockout stages.

What’s their current form?
Iran scored an unexpected Round 1 win thanks to an own goal by Morocco just fractionally before full time. They then were very impressive as they kept the powerful Spaniard attack to just 1 goal, however went down 1-0.

Portugal opened their campaign with a 3 all draw with Spain, with superstar Ronaldo scoring 3 goals. In Round 2, Ronaldo scored another goal, however his side couldn’t add anymore, as they went on to win 1-0 against Morocco.

Iran: Beiranvand; Rezaeian, Cheshmi, Pouraliganji, Mohammadi; Jahanbakhsh, Shojaei, Ebrahimi, Hajsafi, Taremi; Azmoun.
Portugal: Patricio; Soares, Pepe, Alves, Guerreiro; Silva, Moutinho, Carvalho, Fernandes; Guedes, Ronaldo.

Any interesting facts I should know?
Ronaldo has scored 4 goals in 2 goals and is in perfect position to claim the Golden boot.

What should I be betting on?
Portugal to win, Ronaldo to score.

Wolf’s Prediction

Can anyone stop Cristiano Ronaldo… His legend continues to grow as does the list of teams/nations that he has scored against. It took him less than 5 minutes to break free off a corner and head home against Morocco. He has now scored 17 goals in his last 16 matches for his country since the start of last year. Iran are faced with a double edged sword in this one. They are a defensive side by nature but need to win the game in order to make the knockout stages. Iran managed just 22% possession against Spain and that amount is not enough to create any goal scoring opportunities. With two defensive sides on display it is hard to see this one becoming an eye catcher. Under 1.5 goals is 3-0 in Iran’s last 3 World Cup games and if they can hold Spain to a single goal they can do the same against Portugal. Morocco were all over Portugal and if Iran can take their opportunities The Wolf is a firm believer that they can cause an upset. It all starts will making  anyone other than Ronaldo beat them.
