Europa League Semi Final Previews

Man Utd v Celta Vigo (1-0) (Fri 5:05am)
Jose Mourinho’s defensive tactics have completely changed the Manchester United brand. A club that was renowned for it’s entertaining football and relentless attack now plays at patient and controlled tempo – to be polite. They have not scored more than once in regulation of their last 6 matches in this competition and the Under is 8-0 in their last 8 and 14-2 in their last 16. When Mourinho starts with Herrera and Fellaini all of the chips can be pushed in on the Unders. To hios credit though his side were able to get the desired result. They were able to contain Celta Vigo and created several chances on the counter with the speed of Rashford and Lingard. Most importantly, Rashford found the back of the net with an exquisite free kick. The away goal will allow Mourinho to employ his defensive tactics yet again. The loss to Arsenal at the weekend can be rubbed out as it clear that United have put all their eggs into winning Europa in order to qualify for the Champions League next season. Fellaini and Herrera will again be given the task of holding the midfield and we could see Smalling and Jones get the nod after they made successful returns from injury. With Celta losing their last 5 across all competitions we will see United take the lead and park the bus.

Lyon v Ajax (1-4) (Fri 5:05am)
Wolfy was all over the first leg predicting both teams to score in a high scoring encounter but the away goal from Lyon will not prove to be crucial. The defending from Lyon was calamitous to say the least as Ajax were able to play through, around and behind them at will. It should have been 5 or 6 and with defending like that it is hard to give Lyon any chance of progressing to the final. N’Koulou and Diakhaby didn’t know which way to look as the trio of Younes, Dolberg and Traore had a field day – each finding the back of the net. With such a significant deficit Lyon will have no choice but to push numbers forward in the 2nd leg and that is music to the ears for the Ajax counter attack. Lyon have just 1 clean sheet in their last 15 Europa League matches and have in fact conceded multiple goals in 4 of their last 5 across all competitions. With Ajax being a goal scoring machine in recent months and playing a very expansive brand of football The Wolf smells trouble for the French side. Ajax has scored 26 goals in their last 8 games and 10 in their last 4 in this competition. They will pick off Lyon on the counter and are a huge price for the outright win.
