UCL Round of 16 Previews

Wednesday (4:45am)

Juventus v Barcelona
Barcelona made the great escape against PSG in what will go down as one of the most memorable matches of football. When Cavani scored on the hour mark it should have been over but Barca scored 3 goals in the space of minutes with Neymar stealing the show. One thing is for certain though – they will not be able to overcome a deficit even half that size against Juventus. The Old Lady as they affectionately known have been the best defensive side in Europe for the better part of two decades and they continue to be almost impossible to break down. They are undefeated in the UCL this season with 6 wins and 2 draws and have conceded only 2 goals to date in this seasons competition. Juve will set their lines defensively with Khedira and Pjanic given the task of holding down the centre of the park. We saw Barca exposed at the back by PSG and Juventus will look to do the same with Lichtsteiner, Sandra and Dani Alves. Pique and co will know Higuain very well from his days at Real Madrid but he has taken his game to another level since moving to Italy. Messi, Neymar and Suarez were a non-factor in the away leg against PSG but we are unlikely to see a repeat of that. Remarkably, the Catalan club has won just 4 of it’s last 9 away games in this competition while Juve have lost only 3 times at home in over 40 games. Barca have won only 3 of the last 9 meetings between them and The Wolf has little trust in their defence at the present time.
Best: Both Teams To Score – YES ($1.70)
Value: Juventus WIN ($2.50)

Thursday (2:45am)

Dortmund v Monaco
The scheduling could not have been worse for Dortmund but they have clearly prioritised. They had three teenagers in their starting XI against Bayern resting several key players for their UCL quarter final clash. It means we should not read too much into the 4-1 defeat at the hands of Bayern and should focus more on the fact that they had won 7 of their last 9 leading into that game. They were the highest scoring team in the group stage with 21 goals and had no troubles finding the back of the net in a 4-0 win over Benfica in the second leg. Monaco definitely aren’t shy going forward and this makes for a very entertaining affair as a result. Monaco scored 6 goals against Man City in the Round of 16 – a tie which produced 12 goals. The Wolf says this one could have just as many with two of the most attacking sides in Europe taking the field. Aubameyang takes on the club in which he spent a year at and has not been shy in expressing his hunger to score against the French side. He has 7 goals in his last 5 and is one of the UCL’s top scorers this season with 7 goals. For Monaco, Falcao and Mbappe have been outstanding with Fabinho providing endless overlapping runs down the right flank. We are likely to see a handful of goals in this one.
Best: Over 3.5 goals ($2.05)
Value: 1st Half Over 1.5 goals ($2.15)

Thursday (4:45am)

Atletico Madrid v Leicester
One month is a long time in football and no one could have seen this coming from Leicester. They were in the relegation zone in the Premier League and had just lost the opening leg of their Round of 16 encounter against Sevilla. The club made a big decision in firing Claudio Ranieri but it has proved to be the right one. They reeled of six straight wins, have virtually secured their spot in the top flight for next season and managed to get past Sevilla to be the only English side remaining in the competition. They have scored multiple goals in 7 consecutive matches but The Wolf says not to buy into it. Atletico have been flawless in this competition and have 17 clean sheets in their last 19 at home in the UCL. That is an incredible record and it will continue. Godin, Giminez and Filipe Luis work in unison like no other backline while Gabi, Tiago and Koke have unrivaled determination and stamina. Griezmann and Gameiro add the speed and finishing touches up front to what is the hardest team to beat on any given night.
Best: Teams To Score – Atletico Madrid Only ($1.75)
Value: Asian Handicap Atletico -1.5 ($1.95)

Bayern Munich v Real Madrid
What a quarter final clash! Two of the most successful teams in European football meet in a matchup worthy of being a final. Real have won the UCL or it’s equivalent on a record 11 occasions with Barcelona claiming the title 5 times. They are also the winners of this competition in 3 of the last 4 years and have two of the deepest sides in the competition. The stats don’t stop there. Both are top of their respective leagues and losses are few and far between. Real has lost just 1 of its last 17 while Bayern have been defeated in just 1 of their last 23. The Spanish giants have a good record against their German counterparts. They won won the last 3 meetings between them and progressed on 4 of the last 5 occasions in a knockout tie. With both teams set up very similarly this one could genuinely go either way. Bayern have more steel in defence but Real have an edge on the flanks with Marcelo and Carvajal. The holding midfielders will play the most pivotal role in this tie due to the strength of the wingers. Ronaldo and Bale on one side with Robben and Douglas Costa on the other. The Wolf expects Vidal to play a slightly deeper role alongside Xabi Alonso but this will ultimately come down to which side finds the back of the net more often. Bayern put 10 past Arsenal while Madrid have scored multiple goals in all 8 of their UCL matches this season. Goals, goals and more goals.
Best: Over 2.5 goals ($1.61)
Value: Real Madrid Over 1.5 goals ($3.00)
