UCL Tips: Round Of 16 – 2nd Leg

UEFA Champions League odds

All four home sides have deficits to overcome if they are to progress but Dortmund looks to be the only side with a realistic chance of getting through. Arsenal and Barcelons need at least 4 goals to be any chance of getting through but The Wolf cannot see how they will stop their respecting opponents. One thing is for certain, we are in for some very open encounters and a stack of goals.

UCL Round of 16 Previews

Wednesday (6:45am)

Arsenal v Bayern Munich (Agg 1-5)
This tie is all but done but The Wolf says we can take advantage as a result. Arsenal have no choice but to go for this one which means we will have an encounter just as open as the 1st leg. The Gunners have proven that they can find the back of the net, especially at home where they have scored multiple goals in 6 of their last 7 Champions League matches. The Wolf can see them finding an attacking rhythm but the problem for them is that they have not been able to shut down the Germans. Bayern have scored 5 goals in each of their last two matches against Arsenal and the duo of Coquelin and Xhaka simply cannot handle the midfield of Munich. An even bigger issue for Wenger is that his star player, Alexis Sanchez, is unsettled and set to leave in the summer. He had an altercation  with team-mates leading into the Liverpool clash which saw him start from the bench and the French manager looks to be losing the dressing room. They are now out of the top 4 and about to exit this competition. Bayern certainly don’t need to win this one but with several internationals on the bench fighting for spot in the starting XI they will embarrass Arsenal yet again.
Best: Bayern Munich WIN ($2.20)
Value: Over 4.5 goals ($4.00)

Napoli v Real Madrid (Agg 1-3)
The Italains made the dream start at the Bernabeu but the 8th minute goal almost came too early. It drew a prompt response from Madrid who struck right back and managed three goals prior to the hour mark before controlling the tempo and holding on to a two goal cushion. A 2-0 scoreline will be enough to see Napoli through on away goals rule but that will be some task with Real having scored in their last 8 UCL matches. They will also be well rested for this one after Ronaldo, Kroos, Marcelo and Carvajal were all left out in the weekend win over Eibar. Madrid look like to start with Benzema, Ronaldo and Bale but that could be just what Napoli need. The key for Italians lies in the work rate of their wing-backs, Hysaj and Ghoulman. Containing Ronaldo and Bale is hard enough a task on it’s own but they will need to push forward in order to expose the fact that the dangerous duo rarely drop back to help defensively. They will not beat Real through the middle and The Wolf expects them to go wide as often as possible. Zidane knows all about playing in Italy and Wolfy believes his side will look to contain in the opening half hour before starting to commit numbers on the counter. Marcelo and Carvajal will be very selecting in their forward forays but that doesn’t mean we won’t see goals. Napoli has scored in 10 of it’s last 11 UCL matches at home and lost only once in that stretch. A high scoring draw is the value!
Best: Both Teams To Score – YES ($1.40)
Value: Draw ($3.75)

Thursday (6:45am)

Barcelona v PSG (0-4)
PSG were flawless in the first leg and handed Barcelona their most embarrassing defeat since their back to back losses to Bayern Munich in 2013. Barcelona have taken out their frustration on some inferior La Liga opponents with 4 consecutive wins since the loss to PSG. They have scored at least 5 in each of their last two matches and will need their attack to be as impressive if they are to be any chance. No team has ever overcome a four goal deficit in the Champions League but if there is a team with the firepower to do so, it is Barca. Messi, Suarez and Neymar have all been on the scoring sheet multiple times since the first leg defeat and as noted by coach Luis Enrique they could not have asked for two better games leading into their biggest game of the season. The key for Barca lies in an early goal. If they can get one we could see the Parisians get a little nervous. This is the 3rd time the sides have met in the knockout stage of this competition in the last 5 season and it is PSG’s best chance yet to overcome what has been an immovable object. Verratti and Rabiot were brilliant in the first leg but this time around they will asked to do a whole lot more without the ball. If PSG can score once, The Wolf cannot see Barcelona getting 6. Barca fans can dare to dream but The Wolf says they will come up just short. This one will go one of two way. We will see either a Barca win by multiple goals or PSG hit them on the counter on multiple occasions.
Best: HT/FT – Barcelona/Barcelona ($2.10)
Value: Second Half Over 2.5 goals ($3.00)

Dortmund v Benfica (Agg 0-1)
Following Benfica’s narrow win in Portugal this one sits right in the balance. Dortmund will not be discouraged though as the scoreline was not a true reflection of how the match was played out. Dortmund dominated both possession and chances created but failed to convert. Aubameyang who has been amazing for them over the last few seasons was thew biggest culprit. He sprayed over the top twice when left one on one with the keeper before also missing a penalty. They were the clear winners of the midfield battle with Dembele, Reus and Guerreiro pouncing on all of the loose balls. If Dortmund can create as many chances in this one The Wolf says there can only be one result. Schalke are the only team to hold Dortmund to nil at home this season and one look at their recent form and you can see that they can get a goal when they need one. With a total of 12 goals in their last 3 matches Benfica will not be able to shut them down.
Best: Dortmund -1 ($1.85)
Value: Dortmund Over 2.5 goals ($2.35)
