A-League Season Preview

A-League Tips & Preview Round 1

Brisbane Roar v Melbourne Victory – (Fri 7:50pm)
Suncorp Stadium will host the season opener and it shapes as an absolute cracker! The Victory will be out for revenge following a heartbreaking loss in the elimination finals. On that night Melbourne took the lead in the 86th minute only for the Roar to score twice in two minutes to progress. It capped of a season of dominance with Brisbane registering 3 wins and a draw in the four meetings between the sides. There have been household changes on both ends of the pitch but The Wolf is super excited about the Brisbane trio of Holman, Oar and Maclaren. They will have the stability of McKay and Broich again in midfield and enough experience at the back. For the Victory they will need the returning Rojas to be the Johnny Warren Medal winner if they are to be at the pointy end of the ladder. The losses of Barbarouses and Finkler are huge. It will take time for them to be at their best. Roar!
Best Bet: Brisbane WIN ($2.35)
Value Bet: Team Total -Brisbane Over 2.5 ($4.75)

Wellington v Melbourne City – (Sat 5:35pm)
The pre-season favourites travel across the Tasman to take on a Wellington side looking to bounce back from a disappointing season. Melbourne City made the biggest recruit of the off-season in the form of Tim Cahill but they also lost the A-League’s best local player – Aaron Mooy. The loss of Mooy is far more significant than the signing of the Soceroos greatest ever scorer. Cahill is unlikely to play 90 minutes on a weekly basis and there is still the matter of Socceroos duty. With a complete restructure of their defensive line it could take them time to find their feet. For the Phoenix all eyes will be on Finkler and Barbarouses. Theire presence will ensure a very dynamic Wellington attack but like City they will need to improve defensively after conceding 54 goals last season. The Overs is 3-0 in the last 3 meetings and with both teams having newly formed defences the Over again shapes as the best bet.
Best Bet: Over 2.5 goals ($1.60)
Value Bet: Over 3.5 goals ($2.60)

Western Sydney v Sydney FC – (Sat 7:50pm)
Is there anything quite like the Sydney Debry… NO! In less than five years it has become the biggest regular season spectacle of any Australian sport and the rivalry and hate for one another is as clear as day. There will be well over 60,000 fans on hand at ANZ Stadium for what will be one of the greatest night’s in the history of the A-League. The Wanderers bring a completely new line up to the table with more than half a dozen changes to their starting XI. The return of Bulut up front is a huge upgrade on Piovaccari and should see the Wanderers win more games on the back of their attack. Sydney on the other hand have made it all about defence. From their matches thus far in the FFA Cup it would seem that it is working. Wilkinson and Zullo will improve what was a weak back four while Brazilian striker Bobo looks to be a class act. They have played out some thrillers in the past and this one will not disappoint. Goal fest!
Best Bet: Both Teams To Score ($1.66)
Value Bet: Over 2.5 goals ($1.85)

Perth Glory v Central Coast – (Sat 10:00pm)
The Mariners were horrific last season and The Wolf says it will be much of the same story. Defensively they were abysmal and Paul Okon hasn’t had much time with his squad to address it. Tavares and Faty should help strengthen the middle portion of the field but both have a habit of being ill disciplined which could prove costly in at least a handful of matches. They open their season with a travel to Perth where they have a horrific record, losing their last 4 with a combined score of 13-3. Castro and Marinkovic will completely dominate in the middle of the park while Keogh will contribute with the finishing touches. Perth to kick start their season with a big win.
Best Bet: HT/FT – Perth/Perth ($2.35)
Value Bet: Handicap Perth -2 ($5.00)

Newcastle v Adelaide – (Sunday 5:00pm)
In his season preview The Wolf points out that Newcastle showed plenty of fight last season. Just to get a gauge on that fight… they played Adelaide (the Champions) on three occasions and conceded just a single goal with two scoreless draws and a 1-0 loss. The duo of Brown and Kokko are quality additions and they have strengthened the squad across all areas with Vujica at the back and Nabbout in the front line. They won’t be making a run for the finals but The Wolf doesn’t expect them to get blow out on a regular basis. The Reds will look to continue where they left off with the trio of Isaias, Carrusca and Cirio leading the way. The Reds are the superior side on paper but you cannot shy away from the history books and the Jets good record at shutting Adelaide down. We could see the shock result of the week.
Best Bet: Under 2.5 goals ($2.00)
Value Bet: Draw ($3.50)
