Super Rugby Round 6

A shortened round this weekend with only the six games taking place over 5 continents. The NZ Derby between the Hurricanes and Highlanders is shaping up as a blockbuster with the winner taking top spot in the NZ Conference. The Reds are on the search for their 4th win in a row and their performance last Sunday away to the Jaguares was an indication they are a tough team to crack on the defensive end. The Wolf sees their game against the Stormers presenting serious value.

Round 6 Preview and Tips

Crusaders v Bulls – (Fri 5:35pm)
The Crusaders enter this fixture after two tough losses to NZ opposition by 10 or less points and they will be looking to turn the tables at home this Friday. Boasting an incredible 11-0 record at home since last season, the Wolf sees the Crusaders as a superior side to the Bulls, but with several injuries the Crusaders could struggle to cover the 20.5 points. The Bulls looked the winner last week against the Chiefs at HT up by 14 Points and in control, only to have momentum strangled away early in the second half and go down by 13 Points. The Wolf expects the Crusaders to win this one, but the current line is too big.
Best Bet: Bulls +21.5 ($1.90)
Value Bet: Crusaders 1-12 ($4.00)

Rebels v Sharks – (Fri 7:45pm)
The Rebel suffered their first loss of the season last Sunday at the hands of the Waratahs. Ahead at one stage 20-3 they managed to fall asleep in the second half to go down 27-51. They will be looking to turn it around this week against the Sharks who went down in a tight affair to the Brumbies last week. The Sharks have never lost to the Rebels although this Rebels side is a much more improved side then previous seasons. Unfortunately for the Sharks the Rebels will bounce back this week and with a perfect 2-0 record at home they look hard to beat.
Best Bet: Rebels -5.5 ($1.90)
Value Bet: Rebels 13+ ($2.95)

Sunwolves v Chiefs – (Sat 3:15pm)
The Chiefs survived a scare last week at home to the Bulls and will be looking to hit the ground running this week against the Sunwolves. The Sunwolves put in a huge performance last week against the Lions narrowly going down by only 2 points. This performance should give the Sunwolves some confidence going back home in search of their first win of the season. Both teams seem to have plenty of points in them and with defence being a low priority the Wolf expects lots of points in this one. The Chiefs should win this one off the back off more talented players, but the 23.5 points seems excessive.
Best Bet: Sunwolves +24.5 Line ($1.90)
Value Bet: Sunwolves/Chiefs HT/FT ($7.50)

Hurricanes v Highlanders – (Sat 5:35pm)
The Hurricanes host the Highlanders for the clash of the weekend. Top spot is up for grabs in the NZ Conference and the Wolf sees this game much closer than the market thinks. The Highlanders are the only unbeaten team in the competition and will be looking to keep that momentum running with a win here against an entertaining Wellington outfit. The Highlanders travel for the first time this season where their record against NZ teams isn’t too flash, losing their last three. The Hurricanes on the other hand have won six of the last seven derbies at home. The matchup between All Black No9’s TJ Perenara and Aaron Smith will be one to watch out for, both players are such integral parts of their respective team’s game plans that whoever win this battle should win the game.
Best Bet: Hurricanes -6 ($1.90)
Value Bet: Hurricanes 1-12 ($2.65)

Stormers v Reds – (Sun 2:15am)
The Stormers come off a good win last week against the Blues, dominating possession and grinding out a tough 37-20 win. They go into this fixture as $1.20 -11.5 favourites, which to the Wolf seems too short. The Reds have bounced back from a first round defeat to the Rebels with three straight victories. None more impressive than their defensive effort last weekend against the Jaguares. The Reds looked to have turned corner with Brad Thorn at the helm and the Wolf expects them to be mighty hard to beat against the Stormers. The addition of Scott Higginbotham from suspension should boost the Reds chances in this one and the 11.5 points currently on offer is the way to play it.
Best Bet: Reds +11.5 ($1.90)
Value Bet: Stormers 1-12 ($2.80)

Jaguares v Lions – (Sun 8:40am)
The Jaguares were woeful last week against the Reds and had absolutely no answer for the Reds defence. They have struggled to score points this season and in the Lions this weekend they have their best shot at scoring points. The Lions have allowed 35, 38 and 38 points this season – obviously not placing a lot of emphasis on defence. Despite this the Lions have only lost the one game this season and possess far too much fire power for the Jaguares. The Wolf expects a high scoring affair, but sees the Lions pulling away in the second half to cover the -8.5 on offer.
Best Bet: Lions -8.5 ($1.90)
Value Bet: Lions 13+ ($2.20)
