Super Rugby Round 5

Super Rugby enters its fifth week this and only three teams remaining unbeaten – the Lions, Highlanders and Rebels. All sides are playing this weekend and The Wolf sees one team in particular representing serious value. Two decent derbies between Australian and NZ teams are the games of the weekend and the market has found it hard to split them.

Round 5 Preview and Tips

Chiefs v Bulls – (Fri 5:35pm)
The Chiefs come off the back of a bye this week and will be well rested for what looks to be ‘tired’ Bulls side at the back end of their Tour of Australasia. The Chiefs have looked good in the first few games and the Wolf expects them to account for this Bulls side comfortably. Playing in Hamilton is a fortress for the Chiefs having lost only one out of six against the Bulls and with the track looking dry the Chiefs will look to play an expansive game and move the big Bulls Pack around. The Wolf expects the Chiefs to be too good in a low scoring affair.
Best Bet: Chiefs -17.5 ($1.90)
Value Bet: To Score A Try – Sam Cane ($3.00)

Highlanders v Crusaders – (Sat 5:35pm)
Easily the game of the round here between the Highlanders and Crusaders. The Crusades come off a tough loss at the hands of the Hurricanes last week, whereas the Highlanders have been rested with a recent bye. The Crusaders have won nine of sixteen against the Highlanders in Dunedin but the Wolf feels the Highlanders building momentum in the first few games of the season and is happy to be with them to turn the tables. The 9/10 combination for the Highlanders in Aaron Smith and Lima Sopoaga can take the Highlanders a long way this season and getting a Win against the Crusaders would have been pencilled in their calendar along way out from the start of the season.
Best Bet: Highlanders WIN ($1.80)
Value Bet: Highlanders 1-12 Margin ($2.90)

Brumbies v Sharks – (Sat 7:35pm)
The Brumbies have a must win game here against the Sharks and coming off a big loss last week at the hands of the Melbourne Rebels expect them to improve sharply this week. The Sharks have been playing well without excelling, they were unlucky to only draw with the Waratahs a few weeks ago and touching up the Sunwolves last week showed that they are a capable side. The Brumbies have thrown the ball around in the first few weeks with little to no success and need to resort back to low scoring grinding games. If they can do this, expect the Brumbies to come out on top in this one.
Best Bet: Brumbies WIN ($2.00)
Value Bet: Brumbies 1-12 Margin ($3.00)

Stormers v Blues – (Sun 12:05am)
The Stormers finally get back home after a tough tour of Australia and New Zealand. They failed to pick up a point on tour and will be looking to get their season back on track at home to the Auckland Blues. The Blues had a shock come from behind win against the Lions 38-35 last week and will be expecting to build heading into this clash against the Stormers. The Blues played some outstanding rugby last week and really showed what they can do when they play with confidence. The Wolf thinks this is a game where the line should be far larger than the current -0.5 Points and therefore taking the Blues to cover is a safe bet.
Best Bet: Blues -0.5 ($1.90)
Value Bet: Blues 13+ Margin ($4.60)

Lions v Sunwolves – (Sun 2:15am)
The Lions will be hurting after coming off a last minute defeat to the Blues last week at home and will be looking to turn it around straight away against the Sunwolves. The Sunwolves are yet to register a point this season and the Wolf is sure that they won’t be notching their first win this week. The Line opened 32.5 Points which is not enough for the Sunwolves to cover and sees the Lions covering this comfortable. The Sunwolves have improved but this is a tough ask going over to Ellis Park to take on the high octane Attack of the Lions.
Best Bet: Lions -34.5 ($1.90)
Value Bet: Malcolm Marx to Score 2+ Tries ($4.00)

Jaguares v Reds – (Sun 8:40am)
The Jaguares got their first win of the season last week, defeating the Waratahs convincingly. However, the Wolf isn’t reading into this result too much as the Waratahs were at the back end of their tour and looked a tired outfit ready to get back to Sydney. The Reds on the other hand gained their first consecutive wins since 2014 and look to be building momentum. The tough style they have adopted under enforcer coach Brad Thorn looks to be a style which will trouble particular teams. The Wolf feels it will cause the Jaguares some trouble this week in a low scoring affair which will ultimately see the Reds finish out on top.
Best Bet: Reds +8.5 ($1.90)
Value Bet: Reds WIN ($3.50)

Waratahs v Rebels – (Sun 4:15pm)
The Waratahs have been the disappointment of the competition so far this season having struggled to put it together in the first few weeks. They will be hoping that the arrival back to home soil will get them into gear and firing on a Sunny Sunday in Sydney. The Rebels have been nothing short of superb to start the season, going undefeated through 3 games and looking for the clean sweep on the Australian Conference. Unfortunately for the Waratahs the Rebels look to be firing and how they are not current favourites is beyond me. Will Genia has led the Rebels around the park in career best form and the Wolf expects to see the same again this week.
Best Bet: Rebels +2 ($1.95)
Value Bet: Rebels -6.5 ($3.40)
