The Wrap – William Hill Cox Plate Day

Racing results

Chris Waller referred to Winx’s dominant victory in the 2015 William Hill Cox Plate as shades of Sunline and he wasn’t far off the mark.

Jockey Hugh Bowman was given a charmed run along the rails when The Cleaner rolled off the fence, and when Bowman pushed the button, Winx showed her customary turn of foot and didn’t look back to record a comfortable victory.

It was one of the most impressive Cox Plate victories in recent times and the winning run of the Chris Waller/Hugh Bowman combination continues to soar! The boy from Dunedoo is arguably riding better than any other jockey at the moment.

Criterion and international raider Highland Reel filled the placings in a thrilling Cox Plate.

The Wolf’s recap of an exciting William Hill Cox Plate Day.

Black Book

Credible Witness (Race 1, Moonee Valley)
The Star Witness colt trained by John Sargent trialled well in the lead-up to his debut today and hit the line solidly back in 5th behind the winner Dalradian. Jockey James McDonald had to contend with barrier 11 which didn’t help his cause. Looks a smart type and is definitely worth following with race experience now under his belt.

Valley Sweetheart (Race 5, Moonee Valley)
Making the step up from a Cranbourne maiden win, the Peter Moody-trained filly was a good thing beaten in the Crockett Stakes. Jockey Glen Boss was involved in a bumping duel with Mark Zahra on Miss Gidget, and it was that interference that ultimately cost Valley Sweetheart the race. She proved she is up to this grade and is one to watch going forward. She is also The Wolf’s forgive run of the day.

Bow Creek (Race 8, Moonee Valley)
It was impossible to miss the eye-catching Australian debut of Bow Creek in the Crystal Mile. He stormed to the line behind Turn Me Loose and looks destined for bigger things from the empire that is Godolphin. He’ll be going into black books around the country tonight.

Sack

Harlem River (Race 5, Moonee Valley)
The Wolf is always prepared to forgive one bad run, but Harlem River was disappointing for a second time in the Crockett Stakes and doesn’t look to have recaptured the form from her first prep. There’s no questioning her potential, but until she shows more, The Wolf can’t be backing her again.

Best Backed
Mawahibb (Race 4, Moonee Valley)
The punters steamed into the Team Hawkes runner, backing him from $3.30 into $2.20 including one bet of $5,000 on the Magic Albert colt. Godolphin’s Holler dictated the race from in front and didn’t give anything behind him a chance. It was generally a day for shorties, but the well-backed Mawahibb was never in contention here.

Shortie
Lucky Hussler (Race 8, Moonee Valley)
The Wolf’s best bet Lucky Hussler was crunched into a $2.05 favourite in the G2 Crystal Mile, but could only battle away in third behind the front-running winner Turn Me Loose and the eye-catching Bow Creek. Spare a thought for the punter who placed $10,000 on the Darren Weir-trained gelding. The racing pattern worked against him, but despite that, he was flat and failed to show the turn of foot displayed in his Toorak Handicap win.
