George Main Stakes – Runner By Runner

The Wolf’s runner by runner guide to the Group 1 George Main Stakes to be run at Randwick this Saturday.

The race is held over 1600m and it is the first Group 1 race in Sydney for the new season.

Here are The Wolf’s thoughts on the 2017 George Main Stakes.

Happy Clapper

Last start Group 2 winner who resumed in style. He’s won 3/6 when running second up so expect he’ll be ready to fire here. He’ll have taken plenty of fitness from the first up run and looks a definite place chance in this.

Ecuador

Likely speed runner of the race who faded late in proceedings in the Group 2 Tramway Stakes last time out. He’ll fly out and lead here and whilst it’s usually his go, he’ll have to contend with three or four others who will fight him for the front spot. Unless the field gives him an uncontested lead or he chooses to take a sit, he’ll be doing a lot of work at the front and if that is the case, could write himself off.

Red Excitement

Another of the speed runners who will look to burn across and lead. Last time out he almost pulled off the impossible when breaking away from the field by 10 lengths only to be run down late by Winx. Expect he’ll do the same again here and with those tactics employed as last time, could be a serious threat.

Mccreery

Poor run last time out when first up in the Group 2 Tramway Stakes. He was beaten by four lengths last start and off that, The Wolf doesn’t expect him to be a threat in this.

Mackintosh

First up last start he ran home fairly to finish sixth in the Tramway. On his day he’s very good, but The Wolf suspects he’ll be using this as a lead up run into the Epsom, where he is unlikely to run into Winx.

Winx

Arguably the best horse in the world currently racing and this is most definitely her race to lose. She’s had to do it the hard way this prep; first up she missed the start by four lengths and then she was forced to run down a tearaway leader. She’s unbeaten in her last 19 races and if all things go to plan, she’ll be making it 20 in a row.

Heavens Above

Finished midfield last start behind Happy Clapper in the Tramway Stakes. She’ll be better back in mares grade after a few runs.

Foxplay

Group 1 Queen Of The Turf winner who almost snatched victory from the hands of Winx when first up this prep. She ran a huge race that at the front only to be run down late by Winx. She steps up to the mile here which should suit and The Wolf expects her to be right in the finish.

Where he predicts the runners will settle after leaving the barriers.

*Please note Tom Melbourne has been scratched from the race.

The Wolf’s Top 5

This is as a very competitive Group 1 race with what appears to be only one winning chance. The Wolf is supremely confident in his selections and suggests that place betting around Winx is the way to go as her quote is far too short.

1 – Winx
2 – Happy Clapper
3 – Red Excitement
4 – Foxplay
5 – Ecuador
