World Club Challenge
St Helens Saints vs South Sydney Rabbitohs
Monday 23rd February, 6:00am AEDT
Souths are coming off a solid start to their pre-season with victory in the Auckland Nines and a 12-all draw in the Charity Shield which saw them retain the Charity Shield.
The Rabbitohs are serious about filling their trophy cabinet and have named a full strength side for the match at Langtree Park.
St Helens have home ground advantage and the benefit of two Super League games under their belt.
They smashed Salford 52-6 in their latest outing but will face a massive step up in class when the Rabbitohs come to town.
The Saints won the World Club Challenge back in 2001 and 2007, both times against the Brisbane Broncos.
NRL clubs have a great record in recent World Club Challenges, with five of the last six taken out by Australian clubs.
The battle of the hookers will be an intriguing clash when James Roby comes up against Issac Luke.
Plenty of ex-NRL players are littered through the St Helens side with the likes of Travis Burns, Mose Masoe and Lance Hohaia, keen to prove that Super League can match it with the NRL.
There’s no doubt that the English clubs have the upper hand in regards to home advantage and their season underway, but recent records suggest that NRL clubs are taking the WCC seriously and the Rabbitohs will be no different.
Michael Maguire and the Rabbitohs didn’t travel across the world to treat this as a trial and with Greg Inglis, Adam Reynolds and George Burgess leading the way, they should be too good for a gallant St Helens outfit.
Recommended Bet: South Sydney 1-12 ($3.15)
