Redcliffe Dolphins v Sunshine Coast Falcons
This shapes up as a mouth-watering clash between the minor premiers and the giant-killers of the finals series. The Dolphins finished one point ahead of the Burleigh Bears to wrap up the minor premiership, but it counted for very little last week as the Bears booked their spot in the grand final with a 40-24 victory after leading 24-0 at halftime. Meanwhile, the Falcons have all the momentum heading into this do-or-die clash after they handed the PNG Hunters their first home defeat of the season in Week 1 of the finals and followed up it up with another upset victory over the Townsville Blackhawks last week. The Dolphins won both clashes during the regular season, winning the Round 5 clash 16-12 and Round 18 fixture 28-8. There’s no knock on the Dolphins as they’ve been the most consistent side all season, but the Falcons have gone to Port Moresby and Townsville over the past fortnight and won against all odds. The Falcons’ Melbourne Storm-contracted stars have been inspirational over the first two weeks of the finals and will be the key to success once again. Joe Stimson led from the front in the win over the Blackhawks, running for 210 metres from 23 runs in an 80-minute effort. He was well supported in the engine room by Felise Kaufusi and Tui Kamikamica, who outmuscled the Blackhawks pack and will adopt similar tactics here. Falcons centre Ryan Morgan crossed for a hat-trick in the win and nerves will be the only thing that stops the Falcons from causing a third upset in as many weeks. The +6.5 start looks a great bet for a side that has proven they’re no flash in the pan.
