NRL Stats Watch: 2016 Close Games Record
Records in close games is one of the best indicators on how a team will perform the following season.
Lucky teams are those that win over 70 per cent of of games decided by a score or less.
Unlucky teams are those that win 30 per cent or less of games decided by a score or less.
Lucky teams tend to regress the following year while unlucky teams are generally improvers.
This season the Rabbitohs and Cowboys were forecast to drop games – and they both did losing four and two respectively.
The Raiders were tipped as big improvers – and saw their win total increase by 7.5.
Here are how every team performed in games decided by six points or less in 2016.
Gold Coast: 4-4-1
New Zealand: 4-3
North Queensland: 4-5
St George Illawarra: 7-3
South Sydney: 3-4
Sydney Roosters: 0-8
Wests Tigers: 1-3
So in 2017 expect vastly improved performances from the Sydney Roosters and Newcastle while Melbourne, Canterbury, Cronulla and St George Illawarra should all expect a fall in their win total, a major concern for the Dragons who missed the finals despite going 7-3 in close games.
