Cronulla Sharks v Sydney Roosters
Saturday, August 27, 7.30pm (AEST), Shark Park, Sydney
|Best Bet: Under 40.5 ($1.90)
Other: Sydney Roosters +4.5/Under 40.5 ($3.60)
Sydney Roosters +4.5 ($1.90)
Cronulla’s momentum has come to a sharp halt leading into the finals and they will need to rediscover their form against a resurgent Roosters team if they are to keep their minor premiership aspirations alive.
Paul Gallen is set to return for the Sharks in place of Kurt Capewell while Sosaia Feki is in for Gerard Beale. The Sydney Roosters are unchanged.
The Sydney Roosters have won 56 of 90 all-time matches against Cronulla with the Sharks winning just 32. Cronulla have had the wood on the Roosters lately though with four straight wins including a 32-20 win when the teams met in Round 19. The Sharks have lost just 1 of the last 5 matches between the sides at Shark Park. Five of the last seven matches have bettered 40 points. Cronulla half James Maloney is a Roosters premiership player while Blake Ferguson once played for the Sharks. Jack Bird has scored three tries in three games against the Roosters.
Cronulla remain second on the ladder with a 16-5-1 record though their +171 differential ranks 4th in the NRL. The Sharks have not won in a month, failing to score more than 18 over that period. Since Round 11 the Sharks have ranked fourth in defence and eighth in attack. The Sydney Roosters are up to 14th on the ladder with a 6-16 record and the 13th best differential. The Roosters have won their last two by double digits and have scored 18-plus in four straight. Since Round 11, the Roosters rank 10th in attack and 12th in defence.
Ben Barba v Blake Ferguson. Barba has been in electric form this year but has been shut down nearly completely over the Sharks’ poor run over the last month. Ferguson had his best game at fullback against the Dragons and seems to be settling into the role. This should be a critical matchup.
Stats That Matter
Cronulla are 12-10 ATS with a 12-10 under record while the Sydney Roosters are 11-11 ATS with a 14-8 over record. The Sharks have failed to cover their last four while the Roosters have gone over in 6 of their last 8. Road dogs less than 6 are 22-15 ATS off a win in the final seven rounds of the season with a 22-15 under record. The Sharks gave covered just 3 of their last 10 when favoured by 4.5 or more. The under is 9-5 when a road underdog of 4 or more score 40 the start prior. Road underdogs of 4 or more who won by 20-plus are 16-23 ATS with a 22-17 under record.
Cronulla have come back from 4 of 7 halftime deficits. The Roosters are 0-11 when down at the break.
The Roosters and the under looks the bet here. The Sharks are struggling big time and are unreliable spotting a big start at home. The Roosters are a serious team with their best side on the paddock and won’t be a walkover. There are some strong under angles here including when a road underdog scored 40 the week prior.
