Behind The Curtains: Round 26
All the gossip and rumours from every NRL club.
The New Zealand Warriors are the latest team to emerge as a contender for boom Broncos forward Matt Gillett. Mention of all these clubs seems to mean Gillett wants to stay with Brisbane but is unhappy with the money on offer.
Ricky Stuart has reportedly made enquiries about signing Curtis Sironen from the Tigers. Sironen is under lock and key at the Tigers though and won’t be released.
All is not well in the relationship between coach Des Hasler and captain James Graham. Graham is losing faith in the training staff and game management of the coaching team.
Don’t be shocked to see Cronulla make a late move to sign Souths rake Damien Cook. The Rabbitohs are 3-1 with Cook as a Starter this season.
Gold Coast Titans
The Titans look all but certain to lose quality half Tyrone Roberts. Roberts has had a quality year and has attracted interest from the Eels, Dragons and Storm.
Manly Sea Eagles
Manly are set to boost their outside back stocks by signing unwanted Newcastle winger Akuila Uate. Uate is a former international who has spent most of the season playing NSW Cup.
Melbourne are close to announcing the signing of Kodi Nikorima. The Broncos utility will likely be the starting five-eighth in 2017 if he makes the move.
Take it as read the Shaun Fensom to Newcastle is a done deal. The Knights have almost no talent at the club and Fensom is a rep quality player.
New Zealand Warriors
The Warriors’ capitulation against the Wests Tigers last Sunday has all but ensured Andrew McFadden won’t be at the helm in 2017. Ivan Cleary appears set for a return to the team.
North Queensland Cowboys
Luke Walsh is set to sign with the Cowboys as halves cover during the Origin period. Walsh has done a good job at St Helens since moving to Super League.
The Eels have identified Sam Williams as the man to fill their halves void. Williams is a quality half who has struggled to get past Aidan Sezer and Blake Austin this season.
Penrith are investigating the possibility of signing unwanted Dragons rake Mitch Rein. Rein would only be signed as a backup to Peter Wallace though and may take his chances elsewhere.
St George Illawarra Dragons
Penrith assistant Garth Brennan is the clear favourite to replace Paul McGregor in 2017. The club is chasing Ivan Cleary but cannot afford his hefty price tag.
South Sydney Rabbitohs
South Sydney have emerged as the favourites to sign Jamal Idris. The Rabbitohs are desperately lacking in outside back talent.
Aidan Guerra seems set to re-sign with the Roosters even though it was all but certain he would leave. Guerra will get a new deal.
Elijah Taylor is set to leave the Tigers and make a switch to rugby union. The Tigers are struggling to find room for him in the salary cap.
