Behind The Curtains: Round 23
All the gossip and rumours from every NRL club.
Wayne Bennett is set to release Lachlan Maranta and Jordan Kahu at the end of the season. Bennett has been desperately disappointed with the poor performance of his outside backs.
Shaun Fensom is on the verge of signing with Newcastle for the 2017 season. Fensom is on the outer with Ricky Stuart.
Damien Cook is set for a return to the Bulldogs in 2017. Cook has been given few opportunities by Michael Maguire and Michael Lichaa has struggled for the Bulldogs.
Nelson Asofa-Solomona looks likely to defect from Melbourne to sign with the Sharks. Cronulla are throwing big dollars at the tallest player in the NRL.
Gold Coast Titans
Jarryd Hayne has remarkably come into contention for the NSW captaincy role in 2017. Laurie Daley is seriously considering putting the c next to Hayne’s name next year.
Manly Sea Eagles
Brett Stewart has played his last game for Manly with the Sea Eagle legend all but certain to join his brother Glenn at Catalans. Stewart’s form has been so poor no other NRL club has any interest in him.
Out of favour Canberra forward Paul Vaughan is very much on the radar of the Melbourne Storm. With a couple of young props on their way out, coach Craig Bellamy is after a quality bookend.
The Knights have their eye on Kato Ottio for 2017. Ottio has been in superb form for Mounties but cannot get a look in for senior club Canberra.
New Zealand Warriors
Andrew McFadden will need a finals win to be any hope of retaining his job in 2017. The Warriors have been better in recent weeks but McFadden has clearly yet to unleash the potential of the club.
North Queensland Cowboys
Football manager Peter Parr has received plenty of interest from other clubs and seems set to leave North Queensland. Parr is close with some big-name Cowboys but has fallen out with the CEO.
Parramatta are hoping to lure Jason Taumalolo over the next two years, earmarking him as the player the Eels will build around. Taumalolo is signed until the end of the 2017 season.
Despite speculation Penrith could lose skipper Matt Moylan, the Origin player is expected to re-sign at the end of the year. Moylan will be a Penrith player for a long time to come.
St George Illawarra Dragons
Ivan Cleary has been mentioned as a potential replacement for Paul McGregor at the Dragons next season. CEO Peter Doust is reluctant to make a change but may do so to save his own job.
South Sydney Rabbitohs
Prop Tom Burgess is set to join Manly in 2017. Burgess has struggled on big dollars with Souths this year.
Mitchell Pearce is not expected to play for the Roosters on Monday night. Word from the Roosters camp is that Pearce cannot get his troublesome hamstring right.
Robbie Farah will make a move to Redfern next season with the Tigers rake accepting his time at the club has come to an end. Souths are keen to get Farah’s experience and toughness.
