Behind The Curtains: Round 19
All the gossip and rumours from every NRL club.
Look for Brisbane to ink an English forward in the coming weeks. St Helens’ Joe Greenwood has certainly attracted the eye of Wayne Bennett, a surprise inclusion in the England squad for the Four Nations.
Ricky Stuart is another coach scouring England after the success he has had with Josh Hodgson and Elliot Whitehead. Wigan’s John Bateman is expected to be that player.
The Bulldogs are favourites to sign Kieran Foran after he walked out on the Eels. Foran has an excellent relationship with Canterbury coach Des Hasler and the Bulldogs have been on the lookout for a half.
Luke Lewis faces decision time to take a new offer from Cronulla. He is after a longer term deal and could take up an offer at Newcastle instead.
Gold Coast Titans
Aidan Guerra seems almost certain to return to Queensland with the Titans looking to get him for 2017. Guerra has struggled this year but is a fine player.
Manly Sea Eagles
It would not surprise at all if Brett Stewart was put on ice for the remainder of the season. Tom Trbojevic was outstanding playing at the back against the Dragons.
Melbourne are firming as favourites to sign Newtown half Fa’amunu Brown. Brown played his first game for the Sharks on Sunday and was outstanding. He will be signed if Blake Green moves on.
Newcastle are doing their utmost to offload former Australian winger Akuila Uate. The Knights are struggling to find any takers though due to Uate’s big deal.
New Zealand Warriors
New Zealand reportedly have tried to lure Parramatta coach Brad Arthur to Auckland. They are set to be rebuffed though with Arthur to stay loyal to the Eels.
North Queensland Cowboys
Jarrod Wallace is the latest prop to hit the Cowboys’ radar as a replacement for James Tamou. He may be the most achievable with the club believed to have missed out on Jordan McLean and Jacob Lillyman.
The Eels could have Jarryd Hayne on their books as soon as this year. Fox Sports is reporting that Hayne could play this year if Kieran Foran is released.
There are plenty of senior Panthers players unhappy that Tyrone Peachey was the latest top grader dropped to reserve grade. It certainly showed with their lacklustre display against understrength Sharks side.
St George Illawarra Dragons
Tariq Sims may not be the last Sims boy to join the Saints with the club interested in luring Korbin Sims from the Knights. The Saints are looking at a total rebuild in 2017.
South Sydney Rabbitohs
The Rabbitohs could lose Cody Walker despite announcing that they had re-signed the talented playmaker. Walker has not signed a contract and the Broncos remain keenly interested in him.
Despite missing selection for Origin III, Boyd Cordner is set to replace Paul Gallen as Origin captain for 2017. Cordner has impressed all during his brief Origin career.
Kevin Naiqama’s position in the top grade is in doubt after another poor defensive display against Canterbury. Jason Taylor is getting fed-up with his poor defensive showings.
