Behind The Curtains: Finals Week 3
All the gossip and rumours from every NRL club.
The Broncos have focussed their recruitment attention on Rooster Dylan Napa. The Queenslander has plenty of ability and even more aggression. If they miss out on Napa, Kane Evans will lob at Brisbane.
Blake Austin’s hand injury is far more serious than first suspected, making his courage to play against Penrith remarkable. Austin was among Canberra’s best against the Panthers.
Speculation is running rife that Des Hasler may be on the outs at Canterbury. Ivan Cleary has reportedly been told if Hasler goes he will be the man to replace him.
Cronulla have all but signed Tony Williams for next season. Williams had an unhappy time at Belmore and was sent off from Canterbury by an almighty spray from Des Hasler after a poor last game for the club.
Gold Coast Titans
Josh Hoffman and Will Zillman are set to dig their heels in after being told to find other clubs in 2017. Both are signed with the Titans until the end of next year.
Manly Sea Eagles
Neither Tom or Jake Trbojevic is keen to sign a contract extension at Manly with both happy to back themselves to get plenty of big offers when they come off contract at the end of next season.
Melbourne are eyeing Tuimoala Lolohea to fill the No.6 jersey next season. Lolohea is a great talent and would be an immense signing for the 2016 premiership favourites.
The Knights have emerged as contenders to sign Glenn Stewart, who was granted a release by Catalans. Newcastle are desperate for some veteran bodies for 2017.
New Zealand Warriors
Stephen Kearney is likely to wield the axe and clean out the Warriors over the offseason with Blake Ayshford, Sione Lousi, Matt Allwood and potentially even club captain Ryan Hoffman to be moved on.
North Queensland Cowboys
The AFL has reportedly expressed interest in emerging superstar Kalyn Ponga. The elusive fullback made his first grade debut against the Broncos on Friday.
If the Eels can pinch Mitch Rein at the right price, they would be happy to give him a shot. Rein has some ability but not nearly as much as many – including himself – believe.
Penrith will have a difficult job holding onto talented young half Nathan Cleary. The club they should be most worried about is the club his father eventually lands at, be that the Dragons or the Bulldogs.
St George Illawarra Dragons
The Dragons have made a late play to sign beleaguered half Kieran Foran. The club is desperate for a big-name playmaker to turn around their fortunes.
South Sydney Rabbitohs
The Rabbitohs have emerged as favourties to sign the returning Jamal Idris. The Bunnies are desperate for some strike in their three-quarter stocks.
The Sydney Roosters have a glut of fullbacks for next season but it hasn’t stopped the club making an audacious bid for NSW No.1 James Tedesco. The Tigers are no chance of releasing the under contract Tedesco though.
Mark O’Neill is unlikely to return to his position at the Wests Tigers if found guilty of any alleged indiscretion. O’Neill’s departure would no doubt make Jason Taylor’s position at the club more secure.
