Behind The Curtains: Finals Week 1
All the gossip and rumours from every NRL club.
Matt Gillett will re-sign with the Broncos, bringing an end to one of the most protracted contract negotiations of recent years.
Blake Austin is a chance to return for this week’s monster clash with Cronulla. The Raiders won’t rush him though if not right as Sam Williams is a more-than-qualified replacement.
Canterbury are on the verge of signing Titans winger David Mead. The Titans’ all-time leading try scorer has been told he is free to leave and the Dogs are after outside backs.
The Sharks did not come close to dropping Andrew Fifita for his latest off-field indiscretion. They can taste significant success and will do all they can to reach a rare Grand Final.
Gold Coast Titans
Gold Coast have a fight on their hands to retain veteran Greg Bird. The Knights are prepared to throw big coin at Bird to return home to the Hunter as a replacement for Jeremy Smith.
Manly Sea Eagles
Manly’s pursuit of James Roberts is entirely reliant on the Broncos signing Greg Inglis. The Broncos won’t release Roberts without locking in the Souths skipper.
Jordan McLean will stay with the Storm despite an offer from North Queensland. McLean is one of the most promising young props in the game.
Jake Mamo is set to move to English club Huddersfield if the Giants can keep their spot in Super League. The Giants are coached by former Knights boss Rick Stone.
New Zealand Warriors
Andrew McFadden has likely coached his last game at the Warriors. The club’s shocking end to the season means the front office will be looking at a new coach.
North Queensland Cowboys
Matt Scott is not expected to be fit for this Saturday’s monster finals clash with Melbourne. Scott has been battling injury over the backend of the season.
Semi Radradra may be on his way out of the Eels despite being contracted by the club. Semi got a ‘farewell kick’ against the Warriors, nailing it from the sideline. It seems like an indication he is about to leave.
The Panthers are looking to move on centre Dean Whare. A strong defensive centre, Whare has proven too much of an injury risk for Penrith.
St George Illawarra Dragons
The Dragons are set to move on coach Paul McGregor and they will be replacing him with a budget option. Names being thrown around include Garth Brennan, Jason Demetriou and Adam O’Brien. Former Dragons prop Jason Ryles may also be approached but is unlikely to consider himself ready at this stage.
South Sydney Rabbitohs
Robbie Farah will be announced as joining South Sydney this week. His unfortunate end at the Wests Tigers was announced on Sunday after a deal was reached with the Rabbitohs.
Expect Trent Robinson to wield the axe over the offseason with Sam Moa, Isaac Liu, Jackson Hastings and Daniel Tupou all expected to be shopped around.
The Tigers are looking at Mitch Rein to wear the No.9 jersey next year. His price tag though could scare the Tigers – who are in some salary cap strife – off.
