Randwick Race 2, No.7 Twist Tops
Want to bet around the early favourite Scarlet Rain. She fell in on debut and has drawn wide here. That creates value around Kris Lees’ filly Twist Tops. Be very forgiving of her two starts to date. On debut she was posted wide (and still boxed on bravely behind the well-regarded Calliope) before she pulled up with issues at Moonee Valley. Has shown terrific speed in her trials to date including her latest at Wyong. Hoping she hugs the rails from the good draw and proves to slick over 1000m.
Randwick Race 6, No.5 Pioneering
Only filly in a field of mares but like the way this Chris Waller-trained three-year-old is tracking this campaign. Was very good (and unlucky) behind Selita first-up before holding her form at her next two outings. Will be all the better for her first try over the mile last start just missing to Denmagic. Drawn to get a midfield trail and J-Mac takes over from Jennings. Waller has five of the nine, but she looks the clear pick of them.
Morphettville Race 4, No.1 Royal Rumble
This three-year-old has his hoof on the till third-up. Has hit the line super in his two outings this preparation and out to the mile now and on the quick back-up are both big ticks. His one prior run at the trip was inconculsive as he was set an impossible task during the Flemington carnival. The Wolf thought his job to finish fifth was very respectable. Should be around even money and should be winning.
Moonee Valley Race 2, No.1 Snoopy
Won his first three starts before measuring up in Group and Listed races over the carnival. Had no luck in a Listed race at Flemington before going down by half a length in the G3 Guineas Prelude. The last time we saw him was in the G1 Caulfield Guineas where he only boxed away, but it was the end of a long preparation. Looks to have returned in great order if his Jan 16 jumpout is anything to go by.
Randwick Race 5, No.12 Lord Von Costa
Just missed in a maiden first-up before the blinkers went on at Wagga, and he bolted in. Covered extra ground in the run but had panels on that field. The son of Von Costa de Hero ideally would be stepping out to 1400m now but don’t discount his chances in the Highway Handicap down on 53.5kg and with a soft gate. He’s a handy three-year-old who will be winning plenty of races in the near future.
5,7,9 / 1,2,8,12,13 / 6,7,11 / 2,3,4,11.
1,5,8 / 1,3,5,8 / 2,4,7 / 1,4,6.
Australian Stakes (Moonee Valley)
Tricky race without knowing where the majority of these are fitness-wise. Rebel Dane’s sprint form last preparation around Ball Of Muscle, Terravista and Chautauqua reads best on paper. However, he knows how to find trouble at Moonee Valley. Due some luck but will need it. Can’t have him at $3.30. Defending champ Mourinho isn’t $41 this year. This edition looks much tougher too. Want to be with the two three-year-olds. Rageese has looked very sharp at the jumpouts while Holler is an underrated speedster.
Carrington Stakes (Randwick)
Medcaut scratched. The Wolf is interested in the two up the very top of the weights. You’ll Never flies fresh (5:2-3-0) and straight to 1400m looks to suit. Drawn middle and Hugh Bowman rides. He’s the one to beat. Red Excitement hasn’t had much go right in his three starts this campaign. He’s likely to be the big improver – just doesn’t want it too wet. Could even lead this field up.
