Keeping the Union Jack in the corner. That’s the favourite according to bookmaker William Hill’s market on next year’s New Zealand flag referendum.
“The votes at the weekend poll to choose an alternative to the existing flag were spread quite widely,” William Hill’s Tim Ashworth said.
“The absence of an overwhelmingly popular new design increases the chances of the Kiwis sticking with what they’ve got – their copycat of the Australian flag without our Commonwealth Star in the lower quarter.”
And the bookmaker thinks there’s little chance of Australia taking its cue from across the Tasman and having its own national vote on the flag.
“Australians did that 114 years ago, it’s just taken New Zealanders a long time to catch up”, said Ashworth
Australia is $9.00 with William Hill to follow their flag flying Kiwi cousins to a new flag vote before the end of next year.
