Adelaide Strikers v Melbourne Stars: Tuesday 7:40pm AEDT at Adelaide Oval
The Adelaide Strikers are at the top of the Big Bash League table and will be taking on the Melbourne Stars, who are the bottom-placed team in the league standings. The Wolf, however, does not think that this is going to be as much of a mismatch as it appears to be and believes that there is an excellent betting opportunity to be taken advantage of.
|Strikers v Stars||Recommended Bets|
|Winner||Melbourne Stars WIN ($2.10)|
|Top Strikers Batsman||Colin Ingram ($4.50)|
|Top Stars Batsman||Marcus Stoinis ($7.00)|
|Top Strikers Bowler||Ben Laughlin ($3.70)|
|Top Stars Bowler||James Faulkner ($4.50)|
The Adelaide Strikers won their match against the Sydney Thunder to go to the top of the league table in a performance that was typical of their style of play. The Strikers batting did not really perform, scoring only 158, but then defended this total with ease leaning on an excellent bowling attack.
Even the 158 that the Strikers reached was thanks to some lower order cameos and that should raise some concerns in their fans. No batsman in their team scored fifty and once again it was down to the likes of Alex Carey and Colin Ingram to steady the ship.
The Adelaide Strikers will be up against a weaker bowling attack when they face the Stars but that still does not guarantee runs for them. The Wolf thinks it is just a matter of time before the Adelaide Strikers are found out and suffer a batting collapse.
For any team to beat the Strikers though they will have to contend against their bowling lineup. Rashid Khan and Ben Laughlin have taken 10 wickets each and even though Ben Laughlin has suffered some punishment in the last two games he has proven himself to be an effective wicket-taker.
The Wolf does not think that the Adelaide Strikers bowling was really tested against the Sydney Thunder but that the Melbourne Stars definitely have the batting to do so.
The only problem is that the Stars have been in terrible batting form. No one apart from Stoinis and Faulkner has scored more than 100 runs for the Stars and they both bat too low to be adding to that tally in normal circumstances.
Kevin Pietersen has looked like a pale shadow of himself in this BBL and Luke Wright’s form also seems to have fallen off a cliff. Ben Dunk finally scored 47 in the last match and could be the one to lead the Stars renaissance.
The Melbourne Stars have ultra aggressive batsmen like Maxwell, Stoinis, and Wright in their team with plenty of batting around them to bat out the overs. All that is left to do is now play fearlessly, something which they may have no option but to do at this stage in the tournament.
Head to Head
The Stars hold a 4-2 advantage over the Strikers although both the Strikers victories have come in the last three matches. The Adelaide Oval was also the scene of both the Strikers victories against the Stars where they hold a 2-1 advantage.
It is easy to see why the Adelaide Strikers are the favorites for this match. The Wolf, however, feels that the Strikers are a team with plenty of weaknesses that can be exposed quite easily. The Melbourne Stars are the lowest that they have ever been and the only way from here seems to be up. Back them to finally play to their potential.
Top Adelaide Strikers Batsman
Colin Ingram has been the best batsman for the Strikers in the last two matches but it still feels that he has not quite played his defining inning of the tournament. Ingram is very good against the spinners as well, something that has been the downfall of his teammates and is likely to face a lot of deliveries thanks to an out of form top-order. With 167 runs and 7 sixes to his name, he leads the scoring list for the Adelaide Strikers.
Top Melbourne Stars Batsman
Marcus Stoinis has the been the one batsman that has looked in excellent touch for the Strikers in every match. His problem has been that he does not get enough deliveries to face in the match but the Wolf thinks he is bound to be promoted up the order in this match. He has 140 runs to his name at a strike rate of 147.36 and 6 sixes to his name leading the Stars in all the three categories. He is an attractive bet at the price being offered.
Top Adelaide Strikers Bowler
The Wolf is backing Ben Laughlin to be the top bowler for the Strikers in this match. He is currently leading the wicket-taking tally for their side along with Rashid Khan with 10 wickets each. The advantage that Laughlin has that he is often overlooked in the shadow of Rashid Khan and that works in his favor. Batsmen are so intent on batting out Khan that they have no option but to attack Laughlin.
He is also a pretty good bowler in his own right and is the highest wicket-taker in BBL history.
Top Melbourne Stars Bowler
More than the lack of batting performances from the Stars, the thing that has hurt the Stars the most is their bowling lineup. No one has more than four wickets after 4 matches. Adam Zampa was supposed to be their trump card in the tournament and has just taken two wickets. In such a scenario where none of the bowlers are doing well, the Wolf recommends taking a punt on James Faulkner.
He will bowl in the death overs and could end up taking some wickets if the batsmen give him something to defend.
