2nd T20 Cricket Preview – Sri Lanka v Australia
Friday September 9, 11:30pm AEST – R.Premadasa Stadium, Colombo
The “Big Show” took place in Pallekele in the 1st T20 as Glenn Maxwell blasted Sri Lanka all over the park in his remarkable 145* off 65 balls in Australia’s record total of 263. Maxwell’s innings was the second highest score in a T20 International and he made sure the absence of Aaron Finch at the top of the order had little impact.
It was a tough night for Sri Lanka who were already coming off a 4-1 ODI series loss and it won’t get any easier when they play the 2nd T20 at the R.Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Sri Lanka have lost their last 6 T20s at the venue with their last win at the ground coming against Pakistan in 2012.
Sri Lanka now holds the joint record for most International T20 losses (12) in a calendar year and appear to have their backs against the walls in Colombo on Friday night.
Two of the matches in the recent ODI series were played at this venue with the honours shared. Australia won the 1st ODI by 3 wickets, while Sri Lanka recorded their sole win for the series by 82 runs in the 2nd ODI.
There’s no questioning Sri Lanka is missing the experience of Angelo Matthews, but the form of Kusal Mendis and Dinesh Chandimal is something they can hang their hat on, especially at this venue in the ODI series. Mendis had scores of 67 and 69 at the R.Premadasa Stadium during the ODIs, while Chandimal made 80 and 48.
Unfortunately for the Sri Lanka batsmen, Mitchell Starc and James Faulkner have relished playing here in the two ODIs mentioned. Faulkner took 4/38 in the 1st ODI and 3/45 in the 2nd ODI, while Starc took 6 wickets across the two matches played here.
The Wolf was expecting more from Sri Lanka in the 1st T20 and can’t fall back into them, especially as they go through their rebuilding phase and poor record in T20s at this venue.
