1st T20 Cricket Preview – Sri Lanka v Australia
Tuesday September 6, 11:30pm AEST – Pallekele
Both sides are down on troops heading into the two-match T20 series after Australia’s 4-1 win in the recent ODI series.
For Australia, Steve Smith and Mitchell Marsh will be joined on the sidelines by Chris Lynn (dislocated shoulder) and Aaron Finch (fractured finger). Both Lynn and Finch are dynamic players in this format of the game and are massive outs with David Warner expected to carry the load after his recent century at this venue in the 5th ODI.
Meanwhile, the transitional period continues for Sri Lanka, but not before they farewell opening batsman Tillakaratne Dilshan, who made sure he fired some parting shots at some his Sri Lankan teammates including Angelo Mathews, who has been ruled out with a calf tear.
Despite Australia’s dominance in the ODI series, Sri Lanka have the wood over Australia in this format of the game, winning 6 of the 8 clashes and the last 5 straight.
The last T20 played at Pallekele in November 2015 was won by Sri Lanka over the West Indies. Dilshan was a major contributor with 56 in Sri Lanka’s imposing total of 215. The recalled Sachithra Senanayake took 4/46 on that occasion and will be hoping for a similar outcome against the Australians.
As already mentioned with both sides fielding weakened sides, The Wolf is happy to take Sri Lanka at the price against an Australian side that still has its struggles against the turning ball and the history books are against them.
