Pumper & The Wolf 22/10/15

The Wolf sits down for his weekly chat over the spring with Hall Of Fame jockey Jimmy ‘The Pumper’ Cassidy talking all things horse racing. If you’ve got a question, send a tweet to @WillHillAus with the hashtag #AskPumper.

The Wolf: Grand Marshall, cherry ripe for the Melbourne Cup now?
Jimmy: I think so. Pulled up good. I was amazed at how clean-winded he was after the race. I let him walk around outside of the mounting yard for three or four minutes after the eventual winner had gone back into the yard and he pulled up tremendous. You could hit him with a hammer – there isn’t one bit of fat on him. All he wants is a bit of luck in running. Chris Waller has done his job and I’ve got to do the rest.

All guns blazing towards the big day then.  Which of Fame Game or Trip To Paris put in a better Cup trial?
I think if Zac Purton (on Fame Game) had have followed Trip To Paris, we may have seen a different winner…

What did you make of the run from Sadler’s Lake?
I’m willing to forgive. I though he could win there – or at least run second to Stratum Star. He never travelled. In the Epsom he felt like he was screaming for the 2000m. Blinkers on next start and at Flemington, he can turn it all around.

What will be the next target for him?
There’s an 1800m race on the last day of the Flemington carnival. It’ll either be an 1800m or 2000m race next. I’d prefer, with the blinkers, that he went to the 1800m. It might give him a chance to travel up and be smoking in the run.

Does he give you the feel of a horse that’ll get 2400m?
He does. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was able to win there that he went towards Sandown.

Can Dawnie Perfect win the Oaks?
Yes. I think she’ll win my sixth Oaks. A – because she’ll stay. B – because she’ll go through the same proven pattern Clarry has used in the past. I actually spoke to Clarry this morning. She’s done tremendously well, has eaten up. She’s doing better now than she was prior to the race. There are a couple of good fillies in the mix but I don’t think they’ll stay as good as her. I was super impressed with the way she went to the line and more so, a furlong and a half after the line. She was so strong. She’s got Oaks written all over her. I’m pleased she is going to the Wakeful because it’ll really toughen her up for the Oaks.

You’ve ridden plenty of nice fillies for Clarry Connors in the past, how does she stack up?
We could see a really nice mare next year. We could see her going around in a Caulfield Cup if she does what I think she’ll do this prep.

In the class of Dear Demi?
Potentially, yes. From a staying point of view. Dear Demi was consistent from distances all the way through. This filly will be more of a late developer. She’s only just starting to furnish.

Three rides on Saturday. Best chance?
I would say Lucky Lago . Talking to Freedy he wasn’t happy that she was so far back last start. The worry with Strawberry Boy is he is equal eights with Lucky Hussler. The pluses are it’s the Valley and I looked after him after he was beaten the other day. Lucky Lago will possie up, she will be cheeky around the Valley and with her short sprint she might get away with it.
