On Thursday, the NL Wildcard game will be played in Arizona. The winner plays the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLDS and the loser is eliminated from the postseason. The Wolf gives his preview and best bets below.
Colorado Rockies at Arizona D-backs (10:00am)
In the National League Wild Card game, the Diamondbacks will host the Rockies at home. The winner will play another NL West team in the LA Dodgers. The Diamondbacks have been one of the best home sides all season as they held a 52-29 record. They also have a major advantage with All-Star Zach Greinke on the mound. He has a 13-1 record at home in 2017 with a 2.87 ERA. The D-Backs have a 16-3 record in his 19 home starts as well. But interestingly, the Rockies won two of those three games. So they are a chance of an upset. He struggled at the backend of the season, which included 3 home runs allowed in his last home start against the Marlins. The Rockies are starting Jon Gray and he earned a win in his last start in Arizona. The Rockies won 4-2 and he pitched 7 strong innings. Overall, the Rockies are 4-0 in his last 4 away starts as well. In the last 2 months of the season, Gray had an ERA of under 2.57 so he’s capable of keeping the Rockies in this one. In the head to head this season, the Diamondbacks lead 11-8. But in Arizona, the two sides have both won 5 games in 2017. So this is looking like a close wildcard game. In the run scoring stats, the Diamondbacks averaged 5.64 runs at home and they ranked second in MLB. The Rockies on the road average 4.14 runs per game which is 25th in MLB rankings. But the Rockies have a good record in Arizona and the Wolf is predicting a very close game. So he’s going for the Rockies +1.5 in a possible 5-4 scoreline in the Diamondbacks favour. He would also suggest backing the over 8.5 total runs in another best bet.
