MLB Tips – 3rd August

The Wolf scrambled to make par on Tuesday going 4-4 on the day. Both feature previews saluted including the upset pick with the Nationals cruising to victory. Wednesday shapes as a tough one but The Wolf says we will get on base and turn walks into as many runs as possible.

SF Giants at Philadelphia Philllies (9:05am) (Best)

Tip: Giants First 5 innings

The last time the Giants went on the road they stumbled through it on their way to a 1-7 record. After a short stint at home, they go back on the road now and will face the Phillies in the first game of the series Wednesday. The just bolstered their pitching stocks in attempt to hold on to that lead in the NL West and the all-important run to the postseason. It come at a big cost though as they had to give up some really good prospects to get the deals over the line. Madison Bumgarner (10-6, 2.09 ERA) will start for the Giants and has suffered from a lack of run support in recent starts. He’s managed a loss and a no decision in his last two, despite only giving up three runs total. The Phillies will send Zach Eflin (3-4, 4.23 ERA) to the mound after allowing seven runs in five innings last start to Miami. It was by far his worst start this season with his control letting him down. The Giants bullpen has burnt the Wolfpack on a previous tip when MadBum started, let’s take the first 5 innings here.

St Louis Cardinals at Cincinnati Reds (9:10am)

Tip: Cardinals WIN

St Louis are coming in to the series against Cincinnati after back to back losses to the Miami Marlins. They now face a Reds team that just traded away the NL league leader in RBI’s to the Mets, Jay Bruce. Cincinnati sit in NL Central cellar and it come as a bit of a surprise to trade away such a valuable asset to their team and some think they short-changed themselves by getting just two minor leaguers in return. Despite that last placed position, they have each of their five series since the break and face a Cardinals team in the last leg of their 10 game road trip. Adam Wainwright (9-5, 4.16 ERA) will pitch for St Louis and managed a fortunate win against the Mets last start after giving up 11 hits. His last start against the Reds back in June, he pitched six innings while giving up just two runs. He’ll face Dan Straily (6-6, 3.84 ERA) who has been very good in his last three, allowing just three runs in 20.2 innings but has never faced the Cardinals in a starting role. The red birds in a close one.
