MLB Tips – 29th July

The Wolf is about as happy as the Rangers bullpen after Thursday’s best bet got crushed. A 7-7 is well below what we have been used to from the best in the business as just like an ace pitcher he says he will bounce back back in a big, big way… with a Friday fillup!

St Louis Cardinals at Miami Marlins (9:10am) (Best)

Tip: Marlins WIN ($1.54)

St Louis travel to Miami after clawing their way back to beat the Mets in the ninth inning on Thursday, putting two runs on closer Jeurys Familia to win 5-4. The Cardinals will look to take some of that momentum in to game one of a four game set against the Marlins in a series which holds importance around the NL wild card spot. As it stands, the Marlins hold a one game lead over the Cardinals for that spot but the Cardinals have a very soft spot in the schedule coming up so the Marlins will want to get any advantage they can in this series. Jose Fernandez (12-4, 2.54 ERA) returns home where he is a career 26-1 and has given up only four runs in his last eight home appearances. He has dominated his first two starts after the break, striking out 21 in just 13.1 innings. The Cardinals will counter with Michael Wacha (5-7, 4.37 ERA) who hasn’t completed seven innings in a game since the middle of June. St Louis is 4-0 in the last 4 meetings in Miami but Fernandez at home is just way too hard to ignore. If you’re not confident on the Miami win, the first 5 innings is definitely an option instead.

Chicago White Sox at Chicago Cubs (10:05am)

Tip: White Sox WIN ($2.05)

The Wolf couldn’t let this series slip by without previewing at least one game of the ‘Crosstown Classic’ where the North side battle the South side. Wrigley field on the North side will play host to game four of this series where the home side has managed to win in each of the first three games. Chris Sale (14-3, 3.18 ERA) returns from his five game suspension for destroying team equipment. In one of the most bizarre incidents, Sale wasn’t impressed with the throwback uniforms the Sox were scheduled to wear in his last start so he shredded some of the team uniforms and was subsequently pulled and suspended immediately. Before that, he threw eight stellar innings against the Mariners and has helped the White Sox to an 8-1 record in his last 9 interleague starts. The Cubs will hand the ball to John Lackey (7-7, 3.79 ERA) in an attempt to protect home field and square up the series. He’s coming off a loss to Milwaukee where he went 6 innings and gave up three earned. The wins have gone with the home team in this series so far but that will change Friday and there is an expectation that Sale moves to 15 wins on the season.
