The Wolf has you covered with his MLB tips for Thursday’s action.
New York Yankees at Washington Nationals (9:05am)
After rain interrupted game 1 of this series, the Wolf is hoping it stays away for game 2 on ESPN. The two sides were locked at 3-3 and that game will finish before game 2 on Thursday. In the pitching matchup for game 2, Max Scherzer is up for the Nationals and he will pitch against CC Sabathia for the Yankees. Scherzer holds a 1.69 ERA this season and has been striking out lineups like no tomorrow. In back to back starts, he’s over 10 strikeouts and has recored 10 or more in 6 of 9 starts. The Yankees lineup is susceptible to this kind of pitching and that should be the difference in this game. For example, Judge and Stanton are both ranked inside the top three for strikeouts in 2018. So they’ll likely struggle against Scherzer. The Nats also love when he hits the mound as they hold an 8-1 record and have won by 2+ runs in 7 of 9. While for the Yankees, Sabathia has an ERA of just 2.23. But his last start went just 4 innings as he allowed 9 hits against the Red Sox. The Wolf is predicting another tough outing this time on the road in Washington. So in the end, the Wolf will be getting on the Nationals to win this by 2 or more runs with Scherzer getting the job done.
Houston Astros at Los Angeles Angels (11:40am)
Game 3 of this series is another key game for the AL West. The Angels have jumped ahead of the Astros in the standings and Houston won’t be happy with that. So with Justin Verlander back on the mound, they’ll be confident of winning this contest. He has been pretty unlucky on the mound with a couple of tough decisions. Earlier this month, he earned a no-decision agianst the Yankees despite recording 14 strikeouts in 8 innings. Meanwhile, in his last 2 starts he’s pitched a total of 12 innings for just 6 hits/2 earned runs. So it’s likely he’ll go 6-7 innings and keep the Angels bats quiet. Garrett Richards gets the ball for the Angels and he’s 4-1 on the season. In home games, his ERA sits at 5.79 so he does give plenty of opportunities to the opposition. However, the Astros just aren’t finding runs at the moment so the Wolf does like the unders. It’s 3-1 between the two sides in 2018 and they’re locked in another low scoring game as the Wolf speaks. The Astros also have a 27-15-1 record against the under this season and keep sides to just 2.6 runs on average.
