MLB Tips – 16th July

The All Star Game was a let down but the Home Run Derby was a fill up with The Wolf tipping the overall champion (Stanton) and 3 of 4 first round winners. There’s 1099 games to go in the regular season – more than enough to back more winners.

SF Giants at SD Padres (12:40pm)

Tip: Giants WIN

Giants ace Madison Bumgarner (10-4, 1.94 ERA) decided to sit out the All Star game during the week which means he will be very well rested coming in to this one. He last took the mound when the Giants hosted the Diamondbacks before the All Star break and was blistering in that game. Not only did he salute for the wolfpack in the best bet but he struck out 14 batters and delivered a one hit shutout in the process. The Giants lead the majors with a 57-33 record and will look to continue their roll against the Padres who are winless in nine attempts against the Giants this season. Bumgarner is 10-5 in 24 career starts and holds a 3.13 ERA against San Diego. San Diego were great hosts to the HR Derby and ASG but their home team in battling to avoid the cellar of the NL West. They just traded away their All Star starter Drew Pomeranz to Boston and their bats simply aren’t finding enough runs. Andrew Cashner (3-7, 5.40 ERA) gets the nod but let’s be honest, playing MadBum it doesn’t matter who pitches for SD. Just like last time, look to take SF first 5 innings winner, -1.5 handicap and SF win.

Cleveland Indians at Minnesota Twins (10:10am)

Tip: Indians WIN

Cleveland closed out the first half of the season on fire and comfortably hold a 6 ½ game lead in the AL Central standings thanks to their run. They will now focus on trying to figure out the stumbling block that is the Minnesota Twins who have managed to slip by the Indians four times this season from six games. The Indians offence was in some form before the break and is currently led by Francisco Lindor who is on a six game hitting streak and bats at a .391 avg in 19 career games vs the Twins. Carlos Carrasco (5-3, 2.47 ERA) will go against Ervin Santana (3-7, 4.06 ERA) in this first game of this series and are coming off very different starts. Carrasco was knocked for five runs in 3.2 innings while Santana led a 4-0 two hit shutout of Oakland. Outside of his last start, Carrasco has been great and the Indians are 4-1 in his last 5 start and 8-2 in his last 10 road starts against teams with a losing record. Compare that to the Twins going 3-14 in Santana’s last 17 starts and 2-8 in his last 10 home starts. The Indians have been shaky against the Twins this year but the Wolf has faith.
