Port still have one eye on September, but must start winning games like this, against a GWS that wants to maintain a top four spot.
Port has come back from the bye in strong form, with a win over Richmond, a well performed loss to Hawthorn, and blowing North away early last week.
GWS have won four of their last five, beating Sydney, Essendon, Carlton and Brisbane, while also losing to Collingwood. Their best football has proven to be as good as any going around, when they are mentally switched on.
Stats That Matter
Port holds a 4-2 advantage over GWS in their career meetings. The Giants beat the Power by 86 points when they met in Round 4 earlier this year.
The Power are -46% POT and 44% ATS at home this year, as opposed to +38% POT and 57% ATS on the road. Port have started $2.30 or more three times this season for two wins and 100% ATS.
GWS have won all four matches they’ve started $1.60 or less on the road this season. The Giants have played four Sunday twilight slots for three wins at +49% POT and 75% ATS.
Port are proving a hard team to catch, and are winning and losing both at home and on the road. Adelaide Oval provides no comfort here, especially given GWS have travelled well this year.
Both teams are capable of playing burst football and kicking quick goals through a midfield blitzkrieg, but we’ve seen it more from GWS, who have also sustained it for longer. Both sides hit the game with confidence after strong wins last week, and while both can win the ball on the inside, the Giants have more speed and run on the outside, which gives them the advantage.
A fascinating contest awaits if both sides are mentally switched on, but predicting if one of them will be off is a fool’s game.
