AFL Preview Round 9: Suns v Power

Saturday afternoon footy heads to steamy Shanghai, where the Gold Coast will play at their 4th different ‘home’ venue of the year against the club that has led the charge into Asia, Port Adelaide. This will be the fifth ever game played outside of Australia for Premiership points, and the Power will take great confidence from their first foray here last year, where they won by a whopping 72 points, and they will be looking to run this young Gold Coast side off their feet and ensure their pressure dies off quickly. Will the Suns continue to suffer jet lag after all their frequent flyer miles? Wolfie definitely thinks so.

Form

Gold Coast (LWLLL) – The Suns have done much better than anyone expected this year (especially considering their horror draw), but they produced their worst performance under Stewart Dew against the Dees, when they gave up 51 points in the last quarter. Touk Miller and David Swallow continue to grind away and lead by example, but with the injury ward continuing to grow more players need to step up, big time.

Port Adelaide (LLWLW) – Words to describe Robbie Gray: superlative, tough, silky, clearance king, leader, dead-eye dick, impossible match-up, 3-time Showdown Medallist, STAR. The Power looked down and out at half-time last round, and it was Gray who single-handedly lifted them off the canvas to secure an incredible 5 point win over the Crows with just 20 seconds to go. Judging on the emotion post-game, though, have Port played their ‘Grand Final’ already? Can they lift themselves for a clash against the lowly Gold Coast?

What To Expect

The Wolf is expecting nothing less than a big Port victory over in China this Saturday. A number of footy pundits have mentioned that the Power rely too much on emotion for their games; resulting in the swings and roundabouts we have seen so far this season- but after the morale lifting victory last week in the Showdown, Ken Hinkley will have them perfectly primed for this showpiece game. They have a very strong record against the Suns, usually blowing them off the park, and the trip to China should be exactly what this team needs to galvanise them for the season ahead. Watch for the Power to run over the top of a fading Suns side late. Port by plenty.
