Brazil 2016: Women’s Basketball Preview

Rio Olympics 2016 basketball betting odds preview

Olympics: Women’s Basketball

The Wolf previews the Women’s Basketball at the 2016 Olympic Games.

Group A
AUSTRALIA
Coach:
Brendan Joyce
Star Player:
Penny Taylor
WNBA Players:
2 (Penny Taylor, Erin Phillips)
Best Olympic Finish:
2nd (’00, ’04,’08)
Outlook:
Australia look primed to make it to the gold medal game for the fourth time in five Olympic Games. The Opals have a deep team led by Penny Taylor, Liz Cambage and Erin Phillips. They also have plenty of size, a big advantage in the women’s game. Anything outside of a medal will be considered a disappointment for Brendan Joyce and his team.
Prediction:
1st Group, Silver Medal

BELARUS
Coach:
Anatoli Buyalski
Star Player:
Lindsey Harding
WNBA Players:
1 (Lindsey Harding)
Best Olympic Finish:
6th (’08)
Outlook:
Belarus have been on the slide since the ’14 World Cup and were lucky to sneak in through the repechage. Lindsey Harding of the New York Liberty will need to be at her best.
Prediction:
5th Group

BRAZIL
Coach:
 Antonio Carlos Barbosa
Star Player:
Erika de Souza
WNBA Players:
2 (Clarissa dos Santos, Erika de Souza)
Best Olympic Finish:
2nd (’96)
Outlook:
The host nation is ranked seventh in the world so is obviously deserving of a spot. Combined with some WNBA talent they should be advancing to the elimination stage. Hard to see them reach the semis though with a side that lacks regular top competition
Prediction:
4th Group, Quarter Finals

Bet On Olympics Basketball

FRANCE
Coach:
Valerie Garnier
Star Player:
Sandrine Gruda
WNBA Players:
0
Best Olympic Finish: 2nd (’12)
Outlook:
Look likely to fight it out with Australia for the top seed from Group A. They went to the quarters before being eliminated by the US in in the ’14 World Cup and were finalists in the Eurobasket last year. Ranked fourth in the world and should go deep.
Prediction:
2nd Group, Semi Finals

JAPAN
Coach:
Tomohide Utsumi
Star Player:
Ramu Tokashiki
WNBA Players:
1 (Ramu Tomashiki)
Best Olympic Finish:
5th (’76)
Outlook:
Ranked 15th in the world and are only through because of weak Asian qualifying. Won’t win a game.
Prediction:
6th Group

TURKEY
Coach:
 Ekrem Memnum
Star Player:
LaToya Sanders
WNBA Players:

Best Olympic Finish:
5th (’12)
Outlook:
Lack WNBA talent but reached the quarters of Eurobasket ’15 before being eliminated by eventual champions Serbia and were in the semis as the host nation of the ’14 World Cup. Ranked 10 in the world. Could surprise.
Prediction:
3rd Group, Quarter Finals

Bet On Olympics Basketball

Group B
CANADA
Coach:
 Lisa Thomaidis
Star Player:
Kia Nurse
WNBA Players:
3 (Kia Nurse, Nirra Fields, Natalie Achonwa)
Best Olympic Finish:
4th (’84)
Outlook:
Canada have been improving over the last cycle and if they can finish above fourth (and avoid Australia in the quarters) they are capable of a semi-final appearance led by Kia Nurse and Natalie Achonwa. Were hardly challenged in the Americas qualification last year.
Prediction:
4th Group, Quarter Finals

CHINA
Coach:
 Tom Maher
Star Player:
 Wen Lu
WNBA Players:
0
Best Olympic Finish:
2nd (’92)
Outlook:
Former silver medalists and coached by former Opals coach Tom Maher.  Ranked No.8 in the world so have to be considered some hope of a knockout run but lack star power. Hardly impressed qualifying.
Prediction:
5th Group

SENEGAL
Coach:
Mamadou Gaye
Star Player:
Astou Traore
WNBA Players:
0
Best Olympic Finish:
12th (’00)
Outlook:
African champions but don’t rank in the world Top 20. No players of real note. Going to struggle.
Prediction:
6th Group

Bet On Olympics Basketball

SERBIA
Coach:
Marina Malijkovic
Star Player:
Ana Dabovic
WNBA Players:
2 (Ana Dabovic, Sonja Petrovic)
Best Olympic Finish:
Never Qualified
Outlook:
The reigning Eurobasket champions, Serbia are still ranked 14th in the world. They have some world class talent, particularly in Ana Dabovic, and are ascending at the right time. Have the talent to reach the semis but will need to overcome France to get there.
Prediction:
 3rd Group, Quarter Finals

SPAIN
Coach:
Lucas Mondelo
Star Player:
Astou Ndour
WNBA Players:
1 (Astou Ndour)
Best Olympic Finish:
5th (’92, ’08)
Outlook:
Perennial underachievers at the Olympics, Spain will never get a better opportunity to reach the semis for the first time. The No.3 ranked team in the world, Spain reached the final of the ’14 World Cup before claiming the bronze at the ’15 Eurobasket. Look set for a big tournament.
Prediction:
2nd Group, Bronze Medal

UNITED STATES
Coach:
 Geno Auriema
Star Player:
Maya Moore
WNBA Players:
12 (Lindsay Whalen, Seimone Augustus, Sue Bird, Maya Moore, Angel McCoughtry, Breanna Stewart, Tamika Catchings, Elena Delle Donne, Diana Taurasi, Sylvia Fowles, Tina Charles, Brittney Griner)
Best Olympic Finish:
1st (’84, ’88, ’92, ’96, ’00, ’04, ’08, ’12)
Outlook:
The US team just win. No team will get within 30 points in any game. This is one of the great teams the US have ever put together.
Prediction:
1st Group, Gold Medal
