Brazil 2016: Men’s Basketball Preview

Rio Olympics 2016 basketball betting odds preview

Olympics: Men’s Basketball

The Wolf previews the Men’s Basketball at the 2016 Olympic Games.

Group A
AUSTRALIA
Coach:
Andrej Lemanis
Star Player:
Patty Mills
NBA Players:
6 (Patty Mills, Andrew Bogut, Aaron Baynes, Cam Bairstow, Matthew Dellavedova, Joe Ingles)
Best Olympic Finish:
4th (’88, ’96 and ’00)
2014 FIBA World Cup Finish:
Round of 16
Outlook:
Arguably the best Australian team to go to an Olympics, the Boomers are confident they can win their first Olympic Medal. They have been done no favours with the draw – Group A is unquestionably the toughest group – but the golden generation of Australian basketball is ready to shine. The backcourt is gritty with good shooting while the front court has plenty of class, particularly if Andrew Bogut comes up. Depth is the major issue for the Boomers but if they can get themselves into the Top 3 they can beat Lithuania and will likely face a playoff for the bronze.
Prediction:
3rd Group, Bronze Medal

CHINA
Coach:
Gong Luming
Star Player:
Wang Zhelin
NBA Players:
1 (Wang Zhelin)
Best Olympic Finish:
8th (’96, ’04, ’08)
2014 FIBA World Cup Finish:
DNQ
Outlook:
China lack the size and the class to challenge in Group A. A win against any of their opposition would be a big surprise.
Prediction:
6th Group, Group Stage

FRANCE
Coach:
Vincent Collet
Star Player:
Tony Parker
NBA Players:
6 (Nicolas Batum, Tony Parker, Boris Diaw, Rudy Gobert, Evan Fouernier, Joffrey Lauvergne)
Best Olympic Finish:
2nd (’48, ’00)
2014 FIBA World Cup Finish:
3rd
Outlook:
France have been perennial underachievers in major tournament play but with a quality team and off a third-placing at the ’14 World Cup, they can go a long way in Rio. Outside of Tony Parker they are a little thin in the backcourt but they have a powerful one-two punch at the five-spot while Diaw and Batum are as good a wings as there are outside of the US. Should get through their quarter final but a date with Spain in the semis should end their run.
Prediction:
2nd Group, 4th

Bet On Olympics Basketball

SERBIA
Coach:
Aleksandar Dordevic
Star Player:
Nikola Jokic
NBA Players:
1 (Nikola Jokic)
Best Olympic Finish:
2nd (’96)
2014 FIBA World Cup Finish:
2nd
Outlook:
Silver medallists at the ’14 World Cup, the Serbian national team is always difficult to beat. They are enjoying a renaissance of late with Top 4 finishes at the last two World Cups and the ’15 Eurobasket.  With a majority of players playing in Europe, this is a team well suited to international play. Will play it tough and slow but vulnerable to good outside shooting. Could finish anywhere between second and fourth in the group but if they finish fourth then they will not be beating Spain in the quarters.
Prediction:
4th Group, Quarter Finals

UNITED STATES
Coach:
Mike Krzyewski
Star Player:
Kevin Durant
NBA Players:
12 (Jimmy Butler, Kevin Durant, DeAndre Jordan, Kyle Lowry, Harrison Barnes, DeMar DeRozan, Kyrie Irving, Klay Thompson, DeMarcus Cousins, Paul George, Draymond Green, Carmelo Anthony)
Best Olympic Finish:
1st (’36, ’48, ’52, ’56, ’60, ’64, ’68, ’76, ’84, ’92, ’96, ’00, ’08, ’12)
2014 FIBA World Cup Finish:
1st
Outlook:
The United States have lost just once at the Olympic Games since The Dream Team dawned in the era of professionals. There is plenty of talent missing from the US team but they will not be challenged with another gold medal on the cards. This US team is just too good.
Prediction:
1st Group, Gold

VENEZUELA
Coach:
Nestor Garcia
Star Player:
Greivis Vasquez
NBA Players:
1 (Greivis Vasquez)
Best Olympic Finish:
11th (’92)
2014 FIBA World Cup Finish:
DNQ
Outlook:
Will struggle to get beyond their extremely difficult group. Have just Greivis Vasquez of NBA quality and have never done anything on the world stage. Back-to-back South American championships is the best case for them but likely to miss the quarters.
Prediction:
5th Group, Group Stage

Bet On Olympics Basketball

Group B
ARGENTINA
Coach:
Sergio Hernandez
Star Player:
Manu Ginobli
NBA Players:
3 (Manu Ginobli, Luis Scola, Nicolas Brussino)
Best Olympic Finish:
1st (’04)
2014 FIBA World Cup Finish:
Round of 16
Outlook:
The golden era of Argentinian basketball is coming to an end as the generation that has brought the country so much success nears retirement. There is still plenty of class there led by Manu Ginobli and Luis Scola. Should still have the ability to reach the quarter finals but hard to see going beyond.
Prediction:
4th Group, Quarter Finals

BRAZIL
Coach:
Ruben Magnano
Star Player:
Leandro Barbosa
NBA Players:
5 (Leandro Barbosa, Anderson Varajeo, Nene, Marcelinho Huertas, Raulzinho Neto)
Best Olympic Finish:
3rd (’48, ’60, ’64)
2014 FIBA World Cup Finish:
Quarter Finals
Outlook:
The home nation enjoyed a strong 2014 World Cup where they reached the quarter finals after going 4-1 in the group stage. Have a big inside presence with Varajeo and Nene. If Barbosa can get hot, Brazil can make a strong run. Usually not far from the mark but the quarters is their level. Have won four of the last five Pan American Games gold medals.
Prediction:
3rd Group, Quarter Finals

CROATIA
Coach:
Aleksandar Petrovic
Star Player:
Dario Saric
NBA Players:
3 (Bojan Bogdanovic, Dario Saric, Mario Hezonja)
Best Olympic Finish:
2nd (’92)
2014 FIBA World Cup Finish:
Round of 16
Outlook:
Croatia are one of the hardest teams to get a grip on heading into the Olympics. They have a strong starting five with NBA experience and Dario Saric is a player with immense upside but Croatia have not really done a lot on the world stage since the ’92 Olympics. Could sneak into the knockout stage but won’t be going much further than the quarters if they do.
Prediction:
5th Group, Group Stage

Bet On Olympics Basketball

LITHUANIA
Coach:
Jonas Kazlauskas
Star Player:
Jonas Valanciunas
NBA Players:
2 (Jonas Valanciunas, Domantas Sabonis)
Best Olympic Finish:
3rd (’92, ’96, ’00)
2014 FIBA World Cup Finish:
4th
Outlook:
After a disappointing campaign in London, Lithuania have bounced back with silver medals at the ’13 and ’15 Eurobaskets as well as a fourth placing at the ’14 World Cup. Basketball is a religion in Lithuania and there is no question Lithuania are here to medal. They are an aggressive, hard-nosed team who play defence like few others. Will be there when the whips are cracking and could face Australia in the most compelling of the quarter finals.
Prediction:
2nd Group, Quarter Finals

NIGERIA
Coach:
Will Voigt
Star Player:
Al-Farouq Aminu
NBA Players:
2 (Al-Farouq Aminu, Festus Ezeli)
Best Olympic Finish:
10th (’12)
2014 FIBA World Cup Finish:
DNQ
Outlook:
Nigeria are an emerging powerhouse in African basketball but they are unlikely to win a game this Olympics. Some big names but not good enough.
Prediction:
6th Group, Group Stage

SPAIN
Coach:
Sergio Scariolo
Star Player:
Pau Gasol
NBA Players:
5 (Pau Gasol, Ricky Rubio, Jose Calderon, Nikola Mirotic, Sergio Rodriguez)
Best Olympic Finish:
2nd (’84, ’08, ’12)
2014 FIBA World Cup Finish:
Quarter Finals
Outlook:
If any team is going to challenge the US for the gold medal it will be Spain. Perenially around the mark, this Spain team has won the silver at the last two games and probably will here again. They have a clever back court and scoring all across the floor. Well-versed in the international game, Spain will win the group and should be playing in the final. The clear second best team.
Prediction:
1st Group, Silver Medal
