The Light flyweight division appears to be a battle in two between Cuba’s Joahnys Argilagos and Ireland’s Paddy Barnes. Barnes took out the bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics, while Argilagos won the 2015 AIBA World Boxing Championships, which was the qualifying event for these Olympics. Argilagos has looked impressive of late, winning his last three fights in the World Series of Boxing Season.
Cuba’s Yosvany Veitia and Azerbaijan’s Elvin Mamishzada top the market in flyweight division and both men were seeded No.1 and No.2 in respective order at the 2015 AIB World Boxing Championships. Mamishzada defeated Veitia in the final 3-0 and had two TKOs on his way to the gold medal. He also won the gold medal at the 2015 European Games in his own backyard.
Best: Elvin Mamishzada ($4.50)
Ireland’s Michael Conlon is The Wolf’s top pick to win the gold medal in the bantamweight division. Conlon will be looking to improve on the bronze medal he won at the Olympics in London and showed that he is in good form with gold medals in the 2015 World Boxing Championships and 2015 European Championships. The biggest threat to Conlon will be Robeisy Ramirez who defeated Conlon at the London Games when they fought in the flyweight division.
Best: Michael Conlon ($4)
Lazaro Alvarez was a bronze medallist at the 2012 London Olympics in the Bantamweight division and the step up to lightweight has brought out the best in the Cuban. He took out gold at the 2015 World Championships in Doha and also won gold at the Pan American Games in Toronto. Looks to be peaking at the right time.
Best: Lazaro Alvarez ($4)
Vitaly Dunaytsev defeated Lorenzo Sotomayor 3-0 in the quarter-finals of the 2015 World Boxing Championships in Doha and took down the No.1 seed Yasniel Toldeo in the semi-final before taking out the gold medal over Fazliddin Gaibnazarov. Dunaytsev also took out the gold medal at the 2015 Eurpoean Championships and if replicates the form he displayed in Doha, he’ll be adding another gold medal to his growing tally.
Best: Vitaly Dunaytsev ($4)
2012 London gold medallist Roniel Iglesias was defeated in the quarter-final stage of the 2015 World Championships by Parviz Baghirov and looks to be outclassed heading to Rio with Kazakhstan’s Daniyar Yeleussinov the major hope for the gold meal in Rio despite losing to Mohammed Rabii at the World Champs. Yeleussinov won gold at the 2013 World Championships and more recently won the gold medal at the 2015 Asian Championships in Bangkok.
Cuba’s Arlen Lopez is the commanding favourite to win the gold medal in Rio in the middleweight division and with good reason. He won the 2015 World Championships, won the 2015 Pan American Games and also won the 2015 American Confederation Boxing Championships. Looks one of the best bets on the boxing card along with countryman Julio Cesar la Cruz in the light heavyweight division.
Best: Arlen Lopez ($2.85)
Similar to countryman Arlen Lopez, Cuba’s Julio Cesar la Cruz should get it most of his way in Rio in his quest for the light heavyweight gold medal if he has put the disappointment of a quarter-final exit at the London Olympics behind him. He is a three-time World Champion and two-time Pan American champion and the form out of his recent win at the 2015 World Champs stacks up very well after defeating 2015 European Champion Joe Ward in the final.
The Wolf is tipping the 2015 World and European champion Evgeny Tishchenko to add to his gold medal tally with success in Rio. He defeated well-respected Cuban Erislandy Savon 3-0 in the final of the 2015 World Champs and somehow finds himself behind Savon in Rio gold medal betting.
Men’s 91+ kg
The super heavyweight division looks to be between Joseph Joyce and Tom Yoka who are equal favourites at $4. Yoka defeated Joyce in the semi-finals of the World Championships before going on to win the gold medal against Ivan Dychko. Meanwhile, Joyce took out the gold medal at the 2015 European Games with Yoka taking out the bronze medal. It all comes down to who peaks in Rio and Yoka’s 3-0 win over Joyce at the World Champs looks the right form line.
Best: Tony Yoka ($4)
