Brazil 2016: Badminton
The Wolf previews all the of badminton action for Rio 2016.
The men’s singles gold medal looks a race in three between the top three in betting. Lee Chong Wei is the current $2.60 favourite and looks to be hitting form at the right time, going on a run since losing to Chen Long in the 2015 World Championships in Jakarta. He has won seven tournaments since then including the French Open, China Open, Hong Kong Open, Malaysian Masters, Malaysian Open, Asia Championships and Indonesian. In three of those seven tournaments he defeated Chen Long in the final. Lee Chong Wei will have a point to prove in Rio after losing the gold medal match at London 2012 to Lin Dan. Chen Long is on the second line of betting at $3.50 and is a two-time world champion and won the bronze medal at the 2012 Olympics. It’s hard to see Chen Long getting the better of Lee Chong Wei in Rio especially if you line up their 2016 form where Lee Chong Wei has defeated twice in finals at the Malaysian Open and Asia Championships. Lin Dan is the defending Olympic champion and also won the gold medal at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. He’ll be in contention but The Wolf feels his best days could be behind him.
The Wolf is tipping the current World Doubles Champions in Hendra Setiawan and Mohammad Ahsan to follow up their success in Jakarta with the gold medal in Rio. S etiawan has already won an Olympic gold medal when he paired up with Markis Kido at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Lee Yong-Dae and Yoo Yeon-Seong are the current favourites for the gold medal at Rio and were knocked out in the semi-finals at the World Champs by Setiawan/Ahsan. The $4 looks over if Setiawan and Ahsan can repeat the dose.
Bet: Setiawan/Ahsan ($4)
The women’s singles looks to be an open event like the men’s with The Wolf settling on world champion Carolina Marin. Marin has won back-to-back world championships in 2014 and 2015 and is also the 2016 European Champion. Li Xuerui is the current favourite to defend her London 2012 gold medal in Rio, but The Wolf is happy to risk her after her efforts at the World Championships in Jakarta where she was knocked out in the 3rd round.
The Wolf can’t go past the current Olympic gold medalists and World Champions – Zhang Nan and Zhao Yunlei. Yunlei is also the current Olympic and World Champion in women’s doubles. If you’re looking for value the $9 for Ahmad/Natsir looks overs after they took the Chinese pair to three sets in the semi-finals of the World Champs.
